oil filter size

Hello all,

Engines back in my car after 3 years out.....and I'm starting to put everything else back.

and I've had a thought about moving my oil filter remote.

But does anyone know how the size/length of the oil filter is calculated?....is it linked to engine size or flow?

As I was thinking what's the smallest length filter I could get away with?...without doing anything detrimental of course.

Its a rover V8 4.6 engine.

cheers

Can't help you with calculations but it's more often or not linked to what will fit. There is a big and a small filter for the v8, one is for the car and the big one is land-rover. Not sure it even matters much given how these things are ran these days. They aren't exactly ran for 20000 miles between services.

cheers,

just really wondered if I can fit the smallest oil filter possible, without doing anything silly to the engine.

Looks like I have the 5 1/4ins length filter at the moment, and anything less than 4ins might fit.

If anyone knows the smallest oil filter that will fiit...it would be good.

cheers

I've been looking at this one.

unless anyone can recommend anything smaller in height.

cheers

If you go through the selection that's the one they list for the 4.6

I have a vague recollection of someone mentioning a Renault 5 filter for a V8 once.
Don't know if it's true or faulty recall, though..

The shortest one I have found is from a Renault 5 Turbo. That's what is fitted to my engine, although I am considering changing it for a remote filter so I can have a proper Land Rover one instead.

I use the filters from a Ford Sierra DOHC 2.0 which is just short of 4" in height.
If you order from Euro car parts they have a choice of several makes and I usually order a MANN filter (W916/1 501590059).

Changing these about every 5000 miles has worked for me.

As mentioned I,m using Ford Sierra Cosworth filter, probably the same as the DOHC?
Fits in my Rush chassis in the standard position (4.6 gems) with no need for a remote filter housing
I think having a larger filter will mean you can go further before it gets restrictive and needing to be changed, but not an issue with our cars.

The Cosworth filter is in fact slightly shorter than the DOHC one, but has the same thread.

I've found this.....

but would it be dangerously too small in capacity?

I have used a Mini oil filter close to 15 years on the same engine. It fits the SD1 type pump cover. No issues whatsoever. Also, since I have two Minis it is simple to only have one filter that fits them all.

I dont beleive so the Cosworth 2.0 has a large demand for oil flow e.g a turbo 16 hyd tappets and this filter is also used on the Cosworth 2.9 24 valve motor too 8-)

I’m assuming that the Cossie filter would fit a Serpentine 3.9 ?

I use a Cossie EFL90 on my LS engine.

Original LS's use a bloody tiny filter even smaller again, as do most modern cars these days.

They probably work...just change them more often, but I'd always try and use the biggest filter you can. After all...what are the downsides ?
