How to remove a Serp Crank pulley

Post by James 33 »

Hi i need to remove the crank pulley from my 4 litre serp engine as it got damaged. I can't get a socket on any of the bolts though as they are are to close to the center boss. Any trick to it?

Remove the whole thing by removing the centre bolt first?

Chris.

Sorry - not sure what the issue is - just undo the crankshaft bolt that holds the pulley on and then slide the pulley off the end of the crank.

Mines different to that. It's not a one piece pulley. I only want to remove the outer pulley ideally. If I take the who pulley off though will oil leak out?

Oh ok - well what you have is is not an original 4.0 serp pulley then. The pic is of the original item.

This is the best pic I have at the moment. It's a 97 Tvr lump and has a boss bolted to the crankshaft then the pulley bolts to that.

No need for a thin walled socket thats the same pulley TVR use on the Serp motors (and that 400 is ex TVR anyways) 15/16 socket or 24mm job done, even a bulky impact socket goes in there 8-)

I read it that removing the damper via crank nut was what the OP was looking to avoid - Just wants to remove the pulley from the damper.

Yes just want to take off the outer pulley. Nothing I have will fit it though. It is a Tvr 400 engine as well. Didn't know they used different pulleys to the rangerover.

The six bolt pulleys are usually fitted to small bearing engines and have a separate damper and bolt on belt pulley. The large bearing 4.0/4.6 engines don't have the six bolts and have a one piece damper and pulley.

As already said , a thin wall socket is needed to undo the six bolts even if the whole thing is on the bench.

I believe you have to remove the whole pulley assembly from the engine, then dismantle it further.
Oil will not leak out.
