Oil leak?

Post by James 33 »

Should this have something screwed into it? Not run my engine up yet and there's no oil in it but took the plugs out today and wound it over by hand. After I noticed there was a small puddle of oil roughly under this bolt.

I wondered that but can't see anywhere for a return line. Don't want to fill it with oil only for it to pour out again.

You could be right there. It's a Tvr engine so could well have had one. Need to find something to block it off with now.

Just ordered a 1/8" npt bung. Lucky I spotted it before firing the engine up.

Looks like a tap off for a wet gauge line.
Cheers,

Yes it's where TVR put a sender for the electric oil pressure gauge. The idea was odd as the gauge indicates higher as the oil filter clogs up so when you do an oil change the gauge shows a lower reading and is a red herring worry.

This outlet is also used on some RV8's to feed an oil cooler. The return is situated on the offside of the cover just above the filter and just has a screwed in bung in it on these TVR engines and not used.

:whs Its a sh*t place for the sender because it sees the pressure before the filter (unfiltered oil) far better to T off the oil light pressure switch port IMO

I can see how that would affect it. Just going to block it off now. Good I noticed before attempting to start the engine.

The salvage yard you got the motor from probably removed it to sell on those OP senders are notoriously unreliable 8)
