Most likely a Land Rover engine.

Compression ratio is going to be higher than 8.13:1 due to the 10 bolt heads

thanks for having a check anyway chris,i was told it could be an ex stock military landrover engine, apparently the pale blue colour it was painted is a clue,i guess i will never be sure about its true location. it does still have the cross hatch markings on the bores and good compression so hardly a high milage motor.

I know this is years old , but in case anyone else has a 26G engine number i thought i'd correct what's been said . I've got a 1995 LDV400 with a factory fitted ( police order ) 3.5L Rover V8 Auto . It is engine number 26G00575B , it is a 10 bolt head and it is 8.13:1 compression ratio . I don't believe these were fitted to any Land Rover as there subtle differences like the water pump which looks like a period Defender one but the pulley boss is about 1cm closer to the pump body . I think you'll find this 26G engine series will only be found in ex-Police / Ambulance and possibly Post Office vans ., Oh ..and the well known Rover V8 experts with the catalogues were worse than useless and not interested .

Indeed. The LDV version was basically a Range Rover engine, but with the engine made slightly shorter by moving the fan belt pulley back a little bit.
There are quite a few minor differences to achieve that.
