I have just put on a sump gasket - came in the gasket kit for my engine.

It is rubber and has inbuilt metal collars so you just tighten up on them so there is not over tightening.

Many modern engines use no gasket at all.

Exactly what type of RTV did you use ? There are so many sealer options these days, there will be something that will work.

I've bought the rubber gasket from wins international.....am willing to see how it works when I re-assemble the engine.

Think I do need to look at the warp of my sump flange, a little more seriously this time, as it could be my biggest problem with sealing.

I hate oil leaks.....any leak in fact.....my biggest hate of my engine is to see anything leaking......think I need professional help.....

regards

Like Perry Stephenson , I use sealant along with a Cork gasket, the only difference is, I use a VW sealant called Dirko. The advantage of this sealant I'd that when you come to remove the sump a light clout withave a rubber males breaks the seal , what is more, the old gasket /sealant is easily removed with a sharp scraper .

I often get berated by a mate of mine who works on big high power turbine generators. He always says.. "Gasket on its own or sealant with no gasket"

To be honest, having used Right Stuff sealant for years I would happily use it on its own with no gasket on a sump pan if I needed to.

Pretty much ^ quite a few savvy with the spanners TVR RV8 owners just use the Dirko (no gasket) and applied correctly causes no issue its over zealous use of silicone that can cause issues with break away and ending up blocking the oil strainer :?

Most modern engines use no gasket on the sump, really there are so many good sealers out there there is just no need for a gasket.

But you do need to use a suitable sealer..not just bathroom silicone.

Ask him if he has a job for me, please...

I just replaced the tappet cover gasket on my Td5 Discovery and used Victor Reinz HiTemp sealant which seems to be holding well, so far with no leaks.
Cheers,
John
