interesting stuff, thanks. i knew it was a low CR engine, didnt realise it was lower than the normal low CR though. as for millitary suffix' thats a lead worth following up me thinks. its asking for some sort of forced induction i reckon. fun fun fun!

I have a 10A engine number.

Is there any info on the number of 10A engines that were made?

I am just curious to find out roughly how old my engine is as the 10A spans 11 years.

Cheers

Dave

I think you would have to contact LR for that but you probably wont get anywhere with that either.

There is a contact in Landrover who, for a small fee towards the landrover club will issue a letter that is acceptable to the SVA men in coats
(It worked for me in 2006)

So, reading this thread and checking the engine number list given in the link, shows my new engine due to be transplanted into a 1978 manufactured '79 model year 280Z fairlady from japan, is a P6B engine off an Auto car.

On one side above the sump is cast:

4
BA 82291
613769
A

And behind the dipstick between the exhaust ports is stamped:

* 9.25:1 CR *
45114821 D

where the * are circles with some crescent marks in them that look like stylized propeller discs or spinning blades.

However, going by the list, a stamping starting with "451" ought to be 10.5:1 CR? and the danish guy on page one of this thread also had a 451 series with 9.35:1 CR ending in D rather than the List's "A" So does that mean 451xxxxx D suffix engines are 9.35:1 while 451xxxxx A suffixes are 10.5:1?

Possible, I have never been able to find any details on all the suffix letters. Be warned though that your engine has been around a long time and virtually anything could have been done to it.

Hi,
I am trying to find a source of documentary evidence to prove the age of an early Range Rover engine with an ‘A’ suffix (3550****A). I know it was manufactured before August 1972 but I can’t find anything printed that says so. The Range Rover V8 engine numbers on the published lists seem to start at a ‘B’ or ‘C’ suffix. I rang the Gaydon Heritage Centre and they could not help - apparently there were no build records kept for the early Range Rovers.

Can anyone suggest an alternative source for this information?

Also, is there a way of confirming the compression ratio without taking the thing apart? I think it should be 8.5:1

Thanks

3.9 engine number 36d29598b

It just says in the engine number list 1988 onwards.

Is this one of the late 3.9 engines with the cross bolt bosses and cross bolt caps? The guy assures me it's 1995 disco efi.

It's serpentine pulley etc with dizzy from what I can see of the photos...

There's something special about the suffix b I think.
