What cam do, did, I have?

Post by rich112 »

My 4.6L ate its camshaft.

The camshaft has CML5 stamped on it. Any ideas what cam this might be?

The heads have adjustable rockers sitting on shims.

Not sure what to replace the cam with.

Cheers!

Have a read of the forum and search for posts on cams, lots of reading there, also try google. If you are using a distributor you will need an early cam for the drive gear, that is why I am using a 4.2 cam for mine.

You also need to know the ratio of the rocker arms if you intend to use them again, are they group A rockers or Volvo rockers that have been modified or something else? It will affect the lift of the cam so you may need a custom grind to suit.

Yes, that's why I was hoping to replace with the same cam... I'll measure the lift on it and see if I can get something identical.

The rockers are adjustable and have oiling holes in, which means that they aren't volvo?

Give John Eales a ring, they do look a lot like the rockers he supplies,
Ask him about the cam, most engine builders have there cams ground, and number themselves
You’re going to need new followers to go with the cam, ideally the same size as you have, otherwise you will need longer/shorter pushrods.
Have a ring round to all the main suppliers,

Will do.

I have adjustable rockers and they currently sit on shims, so the geometery isn't stock. Given that it's a 4.6l motor with a distributor drive cam, my options are limited. I just hope its not a custom ground cam! It doesn't measure as particlarly high lift but I don't know the rocker ratio.

Have you checked the installed height of the valves, if the pedestals are shimmed it may be because longer stemmed valves have been fitted.

Not measured the installed height yet... There are shims on the pedestals.

John Eales didn't recognize the cam code either! Very odd.

Well it turns out the blank is made by Estas. Waiting to see if they recognize the stamped code...

It was a stock 4.2 cam.

Bought another one from a landrover parts place, only £70.

Measured it against the old one. It's even made by the same company.

Mine has arrived eventually, and it appears to be pretty much the same as the other. They don't match the figures given from LR for the 4.2 though. I don't have a large degree wheel so not quite as accurate but still getting 117 ATDC for inlet and 113 BTDC for exhaust centrelines. Lift at lobe is 0.267"

Did you check the specs of it, duration and lobe centrelines? Be interesting to see if it is the same as mine or same as the specs on Rave.

I have some measurements. I measured angles at every 0.5mm of lift. Not sure what's in the RAVE?
