V8 3.5 efi flapper throttle pot replacement?

Post by Joker »

My 3.5 efi TPS is broken. They don’t make them anymore.

Can anyone tell me which other TPS will work please?

I found this one but I’m not sure if it will work.

If I make a plate for it to fit.

Can anyone help?

Hi. I found that the wires get brittle and are subject to failure. I refurbished mine by carefully grinding down through the bakelite to the encased wires using a 3mm diamond tipped tool. I then carefully bent the wires up. This gave a reasonable length projecting through the top surface. I attached three block connectors and new tails wired into the existing three pin plug to the other side of the connectors. Placing the unit in a vice I wrapped the OD with insulation tape and potted the wires with two pack epoxy resin to ensure the block connectors are covered. The engine has been running and the refurbishment has been wholly successful, at no cost. A spray with black paint and it looks great. I have some photos if they would help?

That's interesting. It has been much covered in the SD1 club forum, as you'd expect, and the common failure is the carbon track simply wearing out with age and use. It is possible, but fiddly, to move the wiper onto an unworn part of the carbon track. At one time, RS Components sold a Vigay pot which was an good electrical replacement, but required an adaptor plate made to mount it. I think it is discontinued now.

Not if the pic is correct. The original has a socket (female) that fits over the throttle spindle. IIRC, one of the Jag specialists has had the originals re-manufactured.

Both these items would replace my original part. However, my fix cost me an hour of my time.

I don't think there is a low cost option; other than to repair. See photo you can see the block connectors.
