There are two coil windings in a solenoid - the first is the main pull in coil and this gets its earth path from the + connection to the starter motor - yep thats right. The second hold in solenoid gets it -ve from the casing of the solenoid and a normal earth path as it needs this when the solenoid has pulled in and created a + at the starter connection thereby removing the the - path for the pull in coil.
If there is not a -ve at the motor connection point when you connect to the solenoid + then the solenoid will not pull in. This could be down to brushes or comm issues.

But I still can't square it with the bypass solution in the vid. Maybe that's mechanised differently?
