starter motors?

Post by Seight-V8 » Sat Mar 17, 2018 1:00 pm

hi all,

Think my rover v8 standard 4.6 starter motor might have finally given up.

Question is should i just replace it like for like....ie standard.....or go for a hi-torq one?

What would be the benefits of a better more expensive one?

The standard one always managed to turn over my engine in the past, although i do have a slightly higher compression ratio this time around.

cheers

scott

My SD1 had the later 'small' Lucas motor. Which did seem to struggle a bit on a cold day. When that failed, I went for a Hi Torque type. Which does seem to spin the engine over at a more consistent speed regardless of temperature.

+1 for the high torque starter. It's a weight saving as well.

I've just removed mine from the engine and its showing a bosch starter with ERR6087 part number.

good ole google shows this as a OEM hi-torq starter......

Still for £252, the WOSP one draws less current and would be kinder on the battery.

I have my old 24v OEM starter off my old 3.5 on my new 4.6 Hi Comp and it has no issues. If the OEM starter is in good nick it will do the job OK.

WOSP High Torque fitted and vast improvement. Cost me £120 from Demon Tweeks.

Note that the solenoid amp rating is high drawing some 15+ amps (have exact figure in garage and it is cold outside to look for it.)

Bosch high torque starter is 1.7kw, the WOSP is 1.4kw, so yes less amps but because it is less power!

Do you mean 150Amps!
15 amps at 12V is only 180Watts

I had a P38 style starter on my 4.6. Not a Bosch but a new after market item. It lasted 13 months and then decided to let go. Autopsy revealed that the PLASTIC planet gears were in million small pieces. I took the remains to the shop where I bought it from. It had 12 months warranty and I asked the guy at the shop whether the 12 months warranty was optimized since the starter lasted 13 months. Anyway, I got genuine Bosch spare parts for free and guess what, they were also plastic ones. I put the starter back together but never used it again. I bought a hi-torq starter and mine has metal gears in it. Of course this had never happened to anyone else...

Mine is a genuine WOSP starter and I was blowing the 30 amp fuse as it was paired with my rad fan and that pulls 18 amps. I contacted WOSP - the boss came back - and said that just about all starter motor solenoids pull 15+ amps on pressing the button. I was surprised but explained the problem.

WOSP seems a great starter motor to me.
