Ideas for a auto gearbox. RWD rear engined 3.5 v8

Post by Sixfoot »

Hello everyone, new here, first post.

So a little history, I have acquired, wait for it… a six wheeled, middle axle steering, rear engined, rover 3.5 v8, auto, RWD, extended cab, Morris minor pick up! Yeh it’s a lot. My grandpa built it in the 80’s sold it in 2000 and I got it back last year. Been working away in the exterior, but haven’t got round to too much engined related. There’s a possibility the box is shot and I need ideas of what might work.

From what I’ve heard it’s currently and Audi a90 gearbox but not sure.

Unfortunately I can’t put the pictures in here.

Give details.

What gearbox is it ? ? Does the box need to contain the 4wd split or is there a separate transfer ?

If you're suggesting an Audi box....does that mean it is a transaxle ? if so, is that what you want to replace it with ? Do any internal diff ratios matter ?

You say engine in rear, facing forwards or rearwards ?...details ?

Does the Audi box have an adaptor plate or special bell housing to mate to the RV8?

Sorry I’m an absolutely cluesless person about this and without the right pictures (which aren’t working) I can explain it very well.

The engine is mounted facing forward. I’m not 100% what transaxle is, but the driving axles do come straight off the transmission as such.

I know nothing about differentials or bell housings.

Im more looking for, if I was staring from scratch does anyone have any ideas what would work.

I’ll get pics that show things better.

ok, so it's just a simple 2wd box you need ?

And yes that style is a transaxle.

Cars like Audi A4's, VW Passat around the late 90's and early 00's used them in FWD configuration so would be an easy bet.

Usually referred to as an Audi 01E, although that can come in other configurations too.

Renault was another popular choice for kit car type things years ago too

I think it's this seller is a UK maker of some conversion kits.

edit...should add though, the above I mention are manual boxes. But fitment wise from the same vehicles should lead you to autos. Although getting something old enough to avoid modern electronics might be harder.

No idea if late 90's is old enough ?

Can you not just replace like for like?
Get the part number of the current box and have a look on your favorite auction site?
What is wrong with the box? Has if ever have an oil change?

I would definitely stick like for like with that! Clearly a lot of work has gone into making it all fit etc. etc.

There was never a factory transmission like that for the Rover V8, so there is no 'easy' solution other than to stick with the same.
