ZF4HP22/24 dimensions

I've a noisy LT77 behind a 4.6 Rover V8 on carbs and am thinking about going auto.
These ZF autoboxes made from HP24 bits in non-electronic HP22 cases with different tail housings look promising but how long are they?
I'd want something as short as possible but with a locking torque converter so I think that rules out the short 3.5 torque converter/bellhousing?

I have a non elecronic ZF 4HP here - from a Range Rover. And the transfer box. You are welcome to collect them (both) for free from S London. They have been outdoors, but undercover, for many years. But bought as OK.

There is only one bellhousing for ZF4HP22 / 24 to Rover V8, and it's very long. The box itself is pretty long as well, so there is no way the combination will be as short as an LT77 with a short bellhousing.

I will try to remember to measure it later.

Yes. They adjusted the output (or whatever) on the 4HP by using a long bell housing and spacing the torque convertor off the flywheel. Presumably to fit the same centres as the manual, as regards mating to the transfer box. And to save money used the same bell housing on the RWD Sherpa, etc.
That extra length is why I didn't fit it to my SD1 as intended. It fouls the bulkhead.

According to Ashcroft Transmissions the 24 front pump is 15 mm longer than the 22 pump so makes the 24/22 hybrid box 15mm longer than standard. The 22 or 24 are normally the same length as a manual box, R380, lt77, lt85, lt95 . I replaced my lt 95 with a zf22 and am replacing it with a 22/24 when I fit the 4.6 soon. My box is expected to arrive tomorrow.

Sorry just thought yours may not be a 4wd with transfer case, as that was what I was referring to for lengths, the 22 or 24 for the 4wds are all the same length as the manuals as they have an adaptor to bolt them up to the lt230, the 22 adaptor is thicker than the 24 one. I am not sure of the tail housing lengths for a rear wheel drive.

I believe that there is only one bellhousing, and all converters will fit inside it. And they will all fit the input shaft / pump.

But you do need the entire ring gear / torque converter assembly including spacers and suchlike to ensure that the overall length is correct.

I'm not 4x4 type, but I assumed the overall length of the LT77 (front of bell housing to where it bolts to transfer box) was longer than the equivalent 4HP. Only reason I can see for spacing the TC off the drive plate and that long bell housing.

I am not home for two weeks to try it myself, but I would have thought Ashcrofts would be correct as that is stated on their website.

I stand under correction, but the P38 GEMS bellhousing isn't much longer than the torque converter's thickness.
I know the P38 torque converter won't fit in the "normal" bell housings.

Thanks for the replies guys - I've found someone who can build me a 4HP22 with all the stronger 24 bits, I'm not sure what the bellhousing is but with a short non-speedo drive Jaguar tail casing it comes in at 715mm from bellhousing to output flange and my LT77 (as best as I can measure since it's still in the vehicle) is 690mm. Perhaps I should have said earlier this is 2WD.
