Jag differential experts?

Post by rich112 »

Anyone in the know about Jag diffs? Specifically 2.88:1 power lock.

Need to know if there are any basic checks I can do to assess its condition (out of a car).

What's worth replacing before it goes in, seals etc?

I have watched rebuild videos by Paul Cangialosi who really seems to know his stuff!

Cheers!

I have a 2.88 powerlock in my P6 Rover.

I removed the rear cover, and then turned it slowly listening for any grinding or roughness, and found nothing. Then turned it fully looking at the teeth on the gears, ensuring they are all scratch and chip free. Everything seemed fine so I replaced the cover with a new gasket, and spent a few weeks getting it to fit into the car.

When I got to 60mph, it started to whine, just a little but a noise all the same.

When I did eventually get it out again (put up with it for a year or so) I dropped it round to a specialist and he rebuilt it for me. This was the surface of one of the bearings.

So yes, you can do some basic checks, make sure everything turns smoothly, turn one output shaft and the other should turn in the same direction as opposed to a non LSD which turns the opposite way, make sure you can't turn them independently by hand, I had to use a couple of tyre levers to shift mine.
