What R380 for my 4.6 RV8?

Hi
I think my LT 77 may be complaining about my 4.6.
Its started to make a whine in 3rd and a grumble.
Not sure what type it is until I drop it from car
Is it worth getting rebuilt? I am told I can get it made stronger with HD gears/bearings etc? Is this true?
I like the box, the ratios suit my Dax perfectly so I am happy to keep it.
Or do I get a R380? And if so, which one from which vehicle? I know it can't be a 4 wheel drive or Sherpa, but dont know what other cars had this box?
