UPDATE !!!

Post by Devonrod »

The brand new gearbox started to whine, its only done 600 miles, so we took it out and found 2 thou endplay on both the countershaft and main shaft, this is despite putting 3 thou preload on the main shaft when we put the new TVR bearing retainer on, the tail housing bush was also worn !
We checked the run out on the bell housing before, and so we have checked it again and it is within specs in both planes, even made a shaft to go tight in the spigot bush to dial gauge any run out and that was OK, the main rear bearing had slight scoring on the cup so that was replaced by a new one, along with a new tail housing bush, while it is apart I have ordered a steel countershaft cluster support plate from 5speeds in the USA and I am waiting for that to arrive before I can complete the box.

Interested to know how to dial gauge the bell housing?

My 10 spline input shaft has a 15mm snout and fits the spigot bush perfectly. I actually used the shaft to centre the friction plate in the pressure plate. All measures up and the snout locates 20mm into the bush.

Basically you need a magnetic base dial gauge which you put on the end of the crankshaft or flywheel. You then put the dial gauge probe to measure the run out of the hole in the bellhousing and then again to measure the face of the bell housing. Acceptable limits are 10 thou at hole and 6 thou at face. The dial gauge should go back to zero after 1 full revolution. Plenty out there on google about this.
