Ldv V8 clutch help please

Post by bodger »

Hi :)
Looking for advice please ..
i have a really bad left knee and looks like an op is due ...

Firstly i have looked at the elctronic clutch option and its far too much money for me ..
I would like to convert to autobox ...i have a good lt77 in there if anyone wants to swap :)
Or a way of making the clutch a lot lighter or making some sort of hand cluch ...
Possibly a motorcycle clutch master cylinder attached to the gear stick ??

any ideas and advice please ... :D [/code]

You can set servo systems for clutches, I bet one of those would make is as light as a feather!

Get a remote servo. They were fitted to the Rover P6, and possibly other cars. Plumb it in-line with the clutch.

Excellent ..:)

Sorry to seem a bit dense on this ...
any idea how i would fit one ?
It the remote servo operated by a cable from the pedal ?
?.if so maybe i could fit a hand lever style of operation on the gear stick ...

They fit in the hydraulic line only. No connection to the pedal. They sort of multiply the line pressure. No idea if they work OK with a clutch too, though.

Hi
A good few years ago a friend had a modified motorcycle clutch leaver on the gear stick with a remote servo in the line after loosing his left foot. It worked after quite a bit of fiddling. As is motorcycle master cylinders do not push enough fluid to operate a car clutch so need fitting with a bigger piston and a longer stroke, they then give nothing like enough effort without the servo. A servo on a foot operated clutch can be a bit wooden and lack feel making the hand clutch option better for doing smooth get away.
best regards

Have a look at this link:http://www.classiccult.com/blog/saxomat.html

Volkswagen had "automatic" Beetles in 60s. The clutch was operated via vacuum clock plus lots of small gadgets. Basically the clutch worked when the driver moved the gearlever. Aging boxes turned into gear grinders ... :D

Thankyou :D
I have a few cunning plans in mind now ...
Thinking along the lines of a lever on gearstick ( ldv one quite long so no problem with space ) conected to a cable going to master cylinder linked to servo to make it easy to move :)

Several UK makers offered an auto clutch some time earlier. BMC and Hillman, for example. Think it was made by Smiths. The BMC manual for my MG Magnette ZA covered it. I've never actually seen one, though.

How about something like a bike brake lever and cable that pulls down on the clutch pedal

It leaves everything usable for any other driver and by mounting the lever on the gearstick would be a neat project

Ian im not too worried about other drivers as its only me insured in the van :))
Im not sure wether with a bike clutch lever that i would get the range of movement required ..
The current master cylinder i have has 1 3/4 inches of travel ..
so i was thinking of making a lever with a greater throw ?
