Re: Rover 3.5 V8 camshaft bearing tool
For what it would cost and the likely hood of a whoopsie if your not well practiced at doing it yourself I would get a automotive engineer to do the job . You only have to ruin one bearing and you'll have to buy a whole set .

The black oily plug isn't a clue ? Put a fresh plug in and run it for a couple of mins then remove plug and look for oil on plug . Also see if you cant see in thru plug hole

Re: Gudgeon pin/little end offset and power.
"Why bother " ......the same reason halfwitts keep climbin mountains and then jumpin off them ๐ Coz its there , anyhow whats the harm in giving it a whirl ,but I suspect that the gains would be minimal and thusly hard for the lay person to measure. Funny this should come up as I was just reading tha...

Re: Slipped liners
Thanks Chris . I may have dodged the bullet, as whilst mostly in bits and uncleaned there is no sign of there being any water in the oil . Im just a bit suss as to why this motor was taken out of service, kinda hoping the donor vehicle was totalled . It definatley hasnt been well serviced . ๐ Just h...

Re: 4.6 con rods. Should they be blue at the wrist pin end?
Yes it is an assembly thing . The pins are indeed an interference fit . The small end of the rod is put in an induction heater untill dull red hot and the pin and piston is aligned and the pin quickly pushed in and the assembly is left to cool. They are fanarklinly tight , my 5 ton press wouldnt mov...

Re: Camshaft removal 4.6
I would have thought that the fact that only the front cam bearing had melted would suggest the block did not get overheated evenly . And if the top of the motor ,rocker cover and manifold also melted I would be reluctant to spend money on it . They are cheap enough , better off getting another . Co...

Slipped liners
I have acquired a 3.9 block ,actually whole engine in bits ( serp motor with dizzy ) ,are there any tell tale signs of slipped liners that one might see on a bare block . Supposed only 60,000kms but I suspect it did most of that on one oil change , funny uneven wear patterns on some bearing shells ,...

Even if you can bump the collets off with the hammer and socket ( and who hasnt ) you still need one of them spring compressors to reassemble

Re: Valve Stem Seals
Oh sorry๐ ,Here was me thinking that dangerous meant there was some significant risk of injury, having a valve drop isn't dangerous, a massive pain in the arse I spose ,wouldnt know for sure as its never happened to me๐ . Dunno what sort spring compressor you use but mine has a screw thing that wind...

Re: Valve Stem Seals
At BDC, one of the valves will be open, BDC is not an option. ( although I guess you would have rocker gear removed so would be an option...just a dangerous one. ) Surely you would have to remove rocker gear to remove the spring and retainer to replace the stem seal .๐ค Piston at bdc with the air li...

Re: Valve Stem Seals
May be worth taking the drain plug out of the sump and making sure the rope isnโt coming out of there. That would indicate a more serious issue! Seriously though, thatโs a god d tip, Iโve heard of a similar practice with compressed air but the rope sounds simpler. Compressed air is good in theory, ...
