Re: Rover v8 mx5 won't rev up

And that is clearly off cylinders, it is not running on all 8 in that video. That was my thought - there is something wrong with that engine!! I would run a compression test on all the cylinders to make sure there's no serious engine damage going on. It might however be just swapped plug leads - do...

Re: rear crank seal insertion

It is a bit of a nightmare. The easiest way I have found is to remove the sump and rear main bearing cap! Then fit the seal, followed by the cap. Of course this is easier when building the engine rather than as a repair. I have got the special Land Rover tool, but that didn't help me much. I have tr...

Re: TA / Wildcat heads

For the oilways - check on the block as there is only one, at the front of the engine if I remember correctly. But the head gaskets have two holes so you can use them on either side. Not sure if that relates to the missing holes on the head or not!

Re: 3.5 SU Lumpy Hot Idle

Are the carbs balanced properly?

You might be idling mostly on just four cylinders.

Re: Clutch / Flywheel Shim Rover 3.5

Definitely. I've run many an engine without a gearbox. Some with the clutch assembly fitted, and some with just the flywheel.

No issues there.

Re: Clutch / Flywheel Shim Rover 3.5

No. The flywheel goes straight onto the end of the crankshaft.

Don't forget there may not be a spigot bush in the end of the crankshaft if the engine was used in an auto before, so you'll have to add one.

Re: big end bearing fault, found strange broken ring/sleeve

My first thought was a collett, but they are split into two, so as Stevie says, not a collett.

I can't think of anything else they could be!

Maybe ask the engine builder?

Re: 87 Hilux, 3.5 RV8 Cooling query

Have you got any pictures? What I think will happen with your setup is that over a few warming / cooling cycles, the water will be drawn from the expansion tank into the system and fill up the header tank to the top. Then, because it has a lower pressure cap, it will escape from the header tank. I h...

Re: Rover V8 Breathing

I have had a manifold in the past where that little bleed pipe was rusted completely solid, so I didn't connect it! Not very advisable. Yeah as Garry says, distributor vac comes from the carb. This is because it comes from right by the throttle plate, and is more subtle than just manifold vacuum. Ch...

Re: Rover V8 Breathing

1. This is part of the cooling system. It is at the highest point of the system and should be connected to the expansion bottle / header tank / top of radiator to allow any air to escape. 2. This goes to the automatic transmission to give an indication of engine load (engine load being about equal t...
