Re: 3.5 9.75:1 Puffing blue smoke

Just to complete the tail of this saga I think I have found the route cause of all my smoke wows. The fuel pressure regulator was incorrectly set delivering about 7psi to my Edelbrock 1404. Having checked the manual i have reset it to the correct 5.5psi. I think the additional fuel pressure was havi...

Re: 3.5 9.75:1 Puffing blue smoke

Update... I ruled out, for now, the valve stem seals as after careful inspection they are all present. I managed to get a bore scope into to the cylinders to have a look and number 8 (which had the lower compression test result) had significantly more carbon build up and looked a bit wet with oil ar...

Re: Washer style valve stem oil seals RV8

Thanks again guys.
For now then I will rule the stem seals out. Which puts me back to sticky, worn, gap aligned or broken rings.

Washer style valve stem oil seals RV8

first of all apologies for all the numpty newbie questions..... Still trying to determine if I have one or two different issues generating my blue smoke. Anyway, the question:- How are the washer style inlet valve stem oil seals supposed to be installed? (unfortunately numerous google searches have ...

Re: 4.6 heads on a 3.5 9.75:1 SD?

They'll definitely fit. Use the stretch bolts and composite gaskets. I am pretty sure that the ancillaries will also fit OK, although you might have spare holes as I think they went to 4 fixings at the ends (or at least at one end!!) Chris. Thanks Chris - ancillaries not a problem as I don't have a...

Re: 3.5 9.75:1 Puffing blue smoke

On my SD1 EFI, 100C is midway on the dash gauge, which I'd guess means this is normal under certain conditions like slow heavy traffic. However, the EFI coolant sensor which is in a different place to the dash one always reads lower than the dash one. On the open road, something like 90C is the nor...

4.6 heads on a 3.5 9.75:1 SD?

I have seen reference to the above being possible and even potential performance upgrade due to the larger ports, but not found much that is definitive. I'm am looking at this option for two reasons i) Long term I would like to have the new style valve stem guide seals ii) If there is a potential pe...

Re: 3.5 9.75:1 Puffing blue smoke

Think I have now found the primary cause of my smoke issue, looks like the intake valve guide seal has slipped down the guide, it's the old 'washer' style seal. It also happens to be on the cylinder that was slightly down on compression as well. I've had a bore scope in there and naturally there is ...

Re: RV8 3.5 SD1 9.75:1 - Compression Test results

Of course anything is possible, but rings don't normally break for no reason. They can be broken when installing. Or if the piston is very worn indeed. Or possibly though detonation. What is possible is the could have rotated so the gaps are in line. Or sticking. Which could show up as low compress...

Re: RV8 3.5 SD1 9.75:1 - Compression Test results

Hi Ian, thanks for response. The purpose of adding the oil and redoing the compression test is to rule out certain things, the absolute reading is not relevant, what is relevant is whether the compression significantly increases as a result of the addition of the oil. If there is a significant incre...

RV8 3.5 SD1 9.75:1 - Compression Test results

Further to my previous post I have carried out a compression test. Method used:- 1. warmed engine to operating temp 2. removed all plugs 3. Ignition and fuel pump off 4. insert guage 5. cranked for a count of 10, throttle slightly open 6. Take reading - repeated for all cylinders Results in Psi:- 1....
