Another thing to try is replace the bushes that hold the gearstick extension on. My gear-change got noticeably better after I spent a bit of time changing them and cleaning that area up.

My car has developed an alarming smell of petrol. I assume (I will obviously check) that it's to do with the couple of tanks of E10 I ran through it not getting on with the 20+ year old rubber hose in the transmission tunnel. Fundamentally, any pipe connection on the water pump pulls water in, anything on the manifold is for water going out. A small holes on the front of the manifold and on the top are for temperature sensors. The one on the back is normally for the heater (if you have one). No idea about the one on the ...
