I didn't know that composite gaskets were fitted until I removed heads, and by that time I'd had the tin gaskets for a while, so just used them.
I too think it is lifter pre load related, so if anyone can hazard a guess for shim thickness i'd be grateful.

cheers

Yes, all off, and assembled as per manual. I'm now getting oil there, so should be fine.

I took the new shafts I had to bits and reassembled them correctly (had my doubts about them) and noise disappeared. I've not touched car for about a month (decorating), and decided to give it a run today. It didn't start very well, seemed to be running on 7 cylinders, but all plugs were firing (mag...

I'll refit the old shafts and see if this works.

Oil pressure as normal, tappets weren't set for pre load, as they were full of oil. Must admit I thought of this, but it shouldn't explain the rattle.

Rattle from engine

I eventually got round to putting a pair of reconditioned Vitesse heads (chemically cleaned, new valves, 3 angle cut, very slight skim to surface heads) on my late P6 engine (9.25 - 1 with fast road cam), and got it fired up today (put of for ages due to extreme hassle taking off/on headers in confi...

I wish I'd gone Chevy small block instead of Ford 351C (still could I suppose) due to ease of getting bits for chevy. I'm going to have to get headers made, but could have got off the shelf ones for the chevy - still, I'll be different from the masses i suppose.

When I was on holiday to Orlando in September, I had parts from Summit delivered to my Hotel. If you buy enough, you can in fact have a free holiday. Example - Edelbrock Carb - less in dollars than £ price here.
Folk on the NSRA site get stuff regularly from them, so check out www.nsra.org.uk.

There's lots of welding on a P6 - great cars though. I had a nice series 1 V8 (in Davos White) for 14 years, and only sold it through lack of use. What p***ed me off though, was the new wings rusting (car garaged) despite properly painted sealed etc.

My Minors

I have 2 Morris Minors - 1955 one has a mild tuned Rover V8 and the other (1950) is gradually being put together with a Ford 351C. I am also into bikes and have a well tweaked Fireblade, and a mildly modded X11. My son also has a Minor with a fiat twin cam (I'm rebuilding it just now). I also have a...
