Re: Compression ratios - I've got a headache.

When I built my 4.6 from a 4.0 block - I used a 4.6 crank, 4.6 conrods, 4.6 gudgeons (the are thicker walled than the 4.0 gudgeons) and used low comp 4.0 pistons - this gives a compression ratio of just under 10:1 - I see you calculated it as just over, I calculated it as just under - in both cases ...

Re: Valve Stem Seals

For the last three days there has not been any smoke at all - very confusing.

Re: Valve Stem Seals

Thanks for all those comments - no oil gauge at the moment just the light so not sure of actual pressure. This a project that is slowly coming together so a lot of things are jury rigged or not installed just yet. Progress has stalled due to this problem and a couple of other things that have croppe...

Re: Valve Stem Seals

But before I did anything like this I would put another 1000 km on the engine and have done an oil change to normal oil to clear out assembly and running in oil. Ian Thanks Ian - when it first started blowing smoke I did drop the running in oil and put in normal oil just in case it was the running ...

Re: Valve Stem Seals

I have the drivers side connected to the inlet manifold but not the passenger side which is just open to atmosphere (need to fix that before too long). With the engine running there is a little suction on the side open to the atmosphere. That is a similar arrangement to an injected 4.6 where the inl...

Re: Valve Stem Seals

Just some additional information. Changed the spark plugs today - all show soot from running rich - the ignition at the moment is EDIS 8 running on default mode so only 10 degrees BTDC is available and I live at the top of a long hill so without ignition advance going up the hill under a bit of load...

Valve Stem Seals

My RV8 is smoking just after start. It is a 4.6 with old 3.5 Strombergs on it. Has been rebuilt over a few years including the heads - probably only covered 500km since rebuild - the crankcase breathers have not been connected up as yet so are open to atmosphere. When you start the engine it runs fi...

Re: E10

In Australia we have had E10 since 2003. We had and still have the usual hype of water in the fuel, rotting old rubber etc. The government came out and said all vehicles sold since 1986 were ok to use E10. Older ones did have some issues but most had already changed to more modern components so gene...

Re: Question on ignition advance for increasing RPM

Arguably you could run the engine without any variation in advance at all, just a constant advance value (in fact on a previous thread someone mentioned that they could run their EDIS based system at a constant 10° and it ran just fine), for whatever reason whoever built/manufactured your engines d...

Re: Question on ignition advance for increasing RPM

Of course vac advance or retard must not be all that relevant to a dizzy system as the mechanical system is because some cars do not even have vacuum advance or retard. My 24v 3.5 RV8 in my 101 does not have vac advance and neither does my Haflinger - neither has it so must not be all that importan...

Re: Question on ignition advance for increasing RPM

Some cars will run vac all the time to the dizzy ( when available ), others will run a spark port which only offers vac at part throttle, but not at it idle. Of course vac advance or retard must not be all that relevant to a dizzy system as the mechanical system is because some cars do not even hav...

Re: Range Rover V8 Carb Heater water flow help required

On my 3.5 (now 4.6) carb engine. The heater outlet is at the back of the inlet manifold and goes through the heater and rejoins the system at the bottom radiator hose via a T junction. The combined coolant then goes into the water pump and back into the block and up into the heads etc and out the th...

Re: Rover V8 headers

The best manifolds for a RV8 are the standard D1 3.9 headers - better than anything aftermarket has to offer and a lot cheaper. The restriction on the D1 was the system back from the manifolds - change this to match at you have a great system.

Re: Rover 3.5 won't start...

On a basic un modifed engine, why do you need shims - the standard hydraulic system will account for any wear.

Re: Engine Rattle

Why are you using 10w60? are you in a hot part of the world? standard oil for UK is 10w40 for the crank oil pump V8. Exactly why use that oil - is too thick and may be the cause of your valve noise. Here in Aust even in the middle of summer 100F and above on a good engine you only use 10w40 and if ...
