Re: What's going on here?
On the earlier engines that thermostat bypass is piped into the back of the water pump. I also have a 4.6 (no dizzy) and have the pipe blocked up as there is no where to go on a 4.6 as there is no inlet on the back of its water pump. The pipe on the earlier standard engines is to allow hot coolant t...

Re: Broken bolt extraction tips!
Clean it all up and apply penetrating oil for a couple of days. Apply vice grips to the stud and see if there is movement. Do not force as you do not want to strip that bit of stud. If it does not move apply a bit of heat to the stud - gently do it and do it enough get the heat down into the threads...

Re: Camshaft removal 4.6
Bought it, all looked ok, turned over fine etc....so I rebuilt with new bearings, quick hone etc. Just a simple refresh, nothing fancy. But damn when I bolted the crank in it needed a 2ft breaker bar to turn the crank over !! If it turned over OK before the build and not after the build then there ...

Sounds OK to me - yes that plug is a bit wet but the other one looks too lean.

Re: Adding an expansion tank to a RV8
You could use the same system that the RV8 in a FC 101 has - the expansion tank is mounted down by the chassis so at the same height as the bottom of the radiator. The expansion tank is outside the 'pressurised' area and is connected to the radiator header via a pipe. As the coolant expands any exce...

Re: Rover v8 engine code
4.0 and 4.6 blocks are all the same. When built the blocks were given one of three classes depending how close they met specs. The highest spec class all became 4.6 engines, the lower spec class became 4.0 engines and the middle class went into either engine. Apparently a colour scheme was used to i...

Re: Rover P6 engine on modern fuels ?
In Australia we have E 10 (Ron 94), Unleaded 91 (RON 91), Unleaded 95, Unleaded 98 and have had these for many years - some since 1986. Our fuel can also have a small component of ethanol but it rarely does. Unleaded 91 is the mainstay fuel that most of our vehicles run on. Our E10 though the cheape...

Crankcase Ventilation RV8
With the old carb 3.5. there is a hole at the back of the block with a filter on it that allows filtered air to flow into the crankcase. Each of the rocker covers have an outlet that goes to the base of each carb where the fumes are sucked into the inlet manifold. On the 4.0/4.6 blocks with a Thor M...

Re: Car Battery failures
Not sure I agree with that Dave. The alternator can in theory deliver up to 150Amps at 14.4Volts. If the battery is flat, I don't know if the battery will take that sort of current, or if the voltage will shoot up to 14.4 and the current will fall. I can't find any data to show how much current a c...

Re: Compression ratios - I've got a headache.
So, it’s 4.0 HC pistons then.... In my engine build mentioned above I used 4.0 Low comp pistons hence my calcs of a bit less than 10:1 - to me this is more usable than 11:1 with HC pistons from the point of view of fuel used etc - yes a little less power but hardly noticeable. Dont forget to put in...
