Maybe worth consideration also, based on some earlier comments - the BMW 330d uses a 5-speed auto (AL5D80 or something like, in BM-speak)which is a GM derived box..... "Real-world" RPM limits are similar, as are the torque curves (compared to a modern 16v 4-cyl rev-box) so it may be an option as it...

MegaSquirt and an OBC.

There must be a few here who have fitted a MegaSquirt (with injector peak hold drivers) to a Rangie etc which has an OBC only to find the MPG readout no longer works properly. I found this with my SD1. The reason is the Lucas injection simply grounds the injectors to open them. The OBC measures the ...

Hi I don't think you will find any modern boxes with a bell housing for the rover engine, when the engine was designed GM were phasing out that bell housing pattern to go for the BOP patten I think Rover were the last to use it by some 30 to 40 years. You will either have to use an adaptor between ...

Plug in an OBD scanner and check for misfire fault codes, especially for common cylinders on a coil pack, ie 1&6, 8&5, 4&7, 3&2. If you get common misfire codes, suspect the coil pack itself breaking down. This is very common with these units and gives the symptoms exactly as you describe, I had th...

Hi You could buy a GM 4 speed auto and add a gearvendors overdrive tail unit to it to it, it would give you 7 forward speeds, generally theu don't overdrive first, use a simple rev operated switch to switch it in at say 3k revs and drop it out when line pressure tells you you have changed up to the...

The 4 HP (with RR bellhousing) has many of the problems I wish to avoid - requires considerable body mods.

Better auto for an SD1

The chat elsewhere here about upgrading the engine and auto on a P5B has prompted me to start a new thread. I have an SD1 EFI which would be greatly improved with a modern auto. The original GM TH180 works as well as any other 3 speed - but anyone who has driven a modern 5+ speed auto will know how ...

As Dave says, the ZF4HP22 on the Rover V8 has a massively long bellhousing (well, about 3-4inches longer than necessary). A different option would be to keep the bellhousing of something else, and make an adaptor. That way you could shave some length of it. If you PM me your e-mail address I will s...

Thank you all for your replies, I need to do some work on sourcing the correct parts etc. and you have given me some direction to follow. Personally I have zero fears of electronics and injection systems as I worked years ago with Bosch and the L and Motronic systems and know it's the best way of f...

Hi Dave, Id go over to the extra code even if you dont need the features, as it is used in a lot more setups than the standard code, its more tunable, better backed up and its what most RV8 owners use in their MSs. The extra code was written with the RV8 in mind, as James and I both have one, so we...

Personally I would go for Fuel Injection too. In fact, I would try to go with Thor, as standard on a Range Rover P38 (assuming I could get the ECU to work standalone). But I work in electronics so it doesn't scare me. But some folk are very scared of 'lectrics, and the attraction of old-school carb...

I'd go for a mildly tuned 4.6 and a ZF 4HP22 4-speed transmission. You can keep it all simple (i.e. carbs, distributor and non-electronic gearbox), but it will still work well. Chris. I'd definitely go for EFI. Probably a hot wire bog standard 3.9 and ZF . In an attempt to keep the MPG reasonable. ...

Thanks for the replies. If the 4.6 drops straight in, then as you suggest the BW 35 wont't take the strain, so, what auto gearboxes have been used with it that i could use. As far as i know the 4.6 is used in the range rover and therefore would have the transfer chain part fixed to the gearbox. ple...

Have you been in touch with Phill Ringwood on here, extra efi? I suspect he has the most rover maps of anyone. Best regards Mike I've not been in touch with any of the pros dealing with MS. Phil seems to specialise in the 'extra' software, and since I didn't really need any of those features stayed...
