As no one has any thoughts yet... the stock needles should be fine.
I would be checking that you have the right ignition timing, right fuel pressure - 2.4psi - the correct dashpot springs, and the correct oil in the dashpots.

And as you've kindly taken the trouble to reply, you may find this interesting. http://forum.britishv8.org/read.php?6,60224,page=1 Avoiding oil leaks is important, I guess, on a track car.. If crankcase pressure cannot escape via the scavenging system it will come out through the seals, and the resu...

Ahh, thankyou. Yes, that front port is the one I want to use, but there's no hose connector in there just an ally plug. I'm using a JWR/Offenhauser dual-port manifold which has a rear port for the servo so I could blank the rear carb connector. Otoh, I suppose I could put a bigger connector in the r...

Edelbrock 1404 4-barrel onto RV8.
My first involvement with a 4-barrel. I have this 1404 I bought years ago for a previous vehicle but never fitted. Was on a Rover V8, so the seller said, now it's going onto my SD1 3.5. I want to use the PCV port which is in the front, or should be. There's an alloy plug in there, looks pressed in, ...

Needles for Piper 270
Just fitted a 3.5 SD1 engine bought years ago from a chap who had it in a Westie - standard other than a Piper 270 cam.
PO used a 4-barrel which he kept, I'm running the standard SUs on the SD1 manifold.
Any recommendations for needles?
Currently has the usual BAK.

The lifters were fitted 24 years ago! Has the engine been refreshed since then? Not to my knowledge. Although no history worth speaking of. The lifters pump up quickly. If it weren't for this weird problem, I'd be quite happy with it, it lugs my Land Rover around pretty well. Mind you, I do have an...

Mmm, yes, I think currently ATF in the dashpots. Had been using 20/50. Iirc the original SU oil was SAE 20. Inline fuel filter quite new. The pump is also pretty new, and the fuel tank. This problem has survived all the component changes and renewal, so far. :? No diaphragms, that would be Stromberg...

Thankyou. I believe for SUs, the correct pressure is 2.6psi, I upped it a bit. I will however check. The dashpots and pistons are clean, no gum. Could polish them with Solvol perhaps. And of course there is no guarantee after all these years that they are a matched pair any more or even belong to th...

Weird problem.
Long-standing problem with the SD1 unit in my Lightweight. Hope someone can give me a steer. Standard engine, with so-called 'hi performance lifters' installed in 1992. Won't stay in tune. Standard H1F6 carbs, although I'm not necessarily pointing the finger at the carbs. I rebuilt them a few years/...
