Re: Camshaft end float

Thanks Dave and Mc Tool, I am coming to that conclusion too as there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. It can't come forward because of the thrust plate and with the centrifugal action of the chain and sprocket, maybe it can't go back either. Just fret about the manual description of .somethin...

Re: Camshaft end float

Thanks Chris,

it is strange there is really no where else to look at the moment. There is nothing at the back of the block, no mounting point or spigot. There is no way of mounting the short nose of the cam to any thrust plate. All a bit odd.

Re: Gems front cover by pass valve

Thanks Chris,

my workshop manual and parts book makes no mention of the cylinder in either so I'm always a bit suspicious. It's a peculiar area with some vehicles having both and some, presumably without an oil cooler, only having the by pass valve with the other capped off.

Gems front cover by pass valve

The front cover arrived back from the vapour blaster with a bag of bits. Thanks to Turner engineering who supplied a new piston for the oil pressure relief valve. The oil pressure by pass valve has a hollow cylinder within the spring but what I don't know is should the relief valve have one too? IMG...

Re: Camshaft end float

Thanks Mc Tool. The original camshaft is exactly the same dimensions as the new one and the horseshoe thrust plate is the original one and I would expect it to have the same effect as a full circular one. The engine is a replacement LR one so the age is unknown. The only oddity is the different colo...

Camshaft end float

Hi, new to the forum and rebuilding a 4.0 GEMS engine. I have a new standard camshaft and the block has a horseshoe thrust plate. There is 5mm end float which is a lot more than the workshop manual specifies. There is no groove for the thrust plate to run in it just sits on the front of the block an...

Restoring a P38a with a V8 obvs

Hello, just starting in on the rebuild of the 4.0 GEMS engine on this very early P38. It's the first V8 i've done so a bit nervous. The rest of the car is at the body shop having some rusty rear quarters replaced. As I am in a high risk group for Coronavirus I will have plenty of time to work on the...
