Re: Using heat on an inlet manifold

Unfortunately my oven just isn't quite big enough, so I guess that I'll just have to be careful with propane torch.

Using heat on an inlet manifold

I've got a carb type manifold with a load of seized in fixings, bolts, studs, etc. My initial instinct is to heat the whole thing up with the big roofers propane torch I've got. Obviously I'll try to heat it evenly and cool it slowly, but I'm still worried that it will warp all over the place. Anyon...

Re: Cast iron manifolds

So you reckon the single downpipe design gives slightly better low end torque then ? Oh well, it looks like I've just wasted my money buying the RR twin pipe manifolds then :( Never mind though, at least I will have both types now, so I can play at building exhaust systems to my hearts content. And ...

SU carb reconditioning ?

What actually wears out and how much does it cost to fix ? As far as I can see there are two major areas which can't be easily fixed - The throttle butterfly assembly, shaft, bushes etc. The piston/carb body fit I just checked out Burlens prices for new HIF44s Over £600 each (out of stock anyway) :s...

Re: Cast iron manifolds

Just picked up a pair of Discovery V8i cast iron manifolds off eBlagg. You can see in the photos how the LH manifold tucks in close to the block compared to the SD1 items. I'm not counting my chickens yet, they've not arrived yet, and I've got to check for cracks/warping and replace the studs yet, s...

Re: Cast iron manifolds

Thanks again gents !
Please forgive my ignorance, I'm on a fairly steep V8 learning curve at the moment.
TBH I avoided V8 conversions for years, until I discovered just how affordable the Rover V8 had become.

Re: Cast iron manifolds

Cheers Chris ! I'd just about given up on this thread getting any useful replies. Would those RR EFi ones be the cast ones with twin internal outlets ? Also fitted to the SD1 car I think ? I've just found some nice cheap(ish) pattern header pipes and matching "Y" pipe to suit those. Probably worth t...

Cast iron manifolds

I'm in the process of fitting a hybrid P6/SD1 engine into my series Land Rover. Nothing special, 9.35 CR with twin SU carbs. The front half of an exhaust system came with the engine which consists of a pair of RR Classic iron manifolds, and a RR Y pipe. Just needs a rear section fabricating. Now I'v...

Re: Distributor drive gears ?

Yes, you're probably right about a single set of points struggling to cope with eight cylinders. Especially on a 50 year old half worn out distributor. I like theidea but it may be somewhat impractical in reality.. The long term answer has got to be a nice new modern trigger unit plus amp box. Back ...

Re: Distributor drive gears ?

I can't see any amplifier box on the side, so I'm assuming that its an earlier SD1 type. I presume that there should be a seperate amp box for the unit I have ? (I don't have one) In any case it's got to be 40 + years old. Anyway, I'm going through a sort of "Luddite" phase at the moment. Said V8 is...

Thanks for that.
I'll just go and pull my SD1 dizzy now, and take a good look.

Distributor drive gears ?

Perversely, while everyone else is trying to upgrade their ignition system, I am attempting to downgrade mine ! I want to swap out the breakerless ignion system on the SD1 engine I have, and replace it with a contact breaker distributor from a P5B or P6. I was talking to a guy who was selling a pile...

Re: Rover P6 engine on modern fuels ?

Refering back to my OP I'm looking to build up a daily driver which I can fill up with supermarket unleaded, available everywhere 24/7. I really don't want to be constantly searching the internet trying to find filling stations which sell super unleaded, and other specialist fuel. Often the informat...

Rover P6 engine on modern fuels ?

I've got a Rover V8 from a series Land Rover that I broke up. Compression ratio would seem to be 10.5:1 I'm just wondering if this lump can be made to run on modern (UK) petrol, or will the high CR make it an absolute nightmare ? I want to be able to fill up anywhere, I really don't want to be spend...

Re: Lucas 14CUX on a 4.6 ?

Thanks for that. I had got it into my head that I would have to buy new 4.6 pistons, but a little research suggests that the 4.0 ones will be OK with a little jiggery-pokery like maybe using SD1 heads with composite gaskets. Of course I realise that you can read as many forum posts and magazines as ...
