Re: Ring gaps 4.6 v8 1 bar of boost

Thanks mate. Was a bit concerned. All built now and waiting for a day off to come so I can fit it!

Re: Ring gaps 4.6 v8 1 bar of boost

Thanks for that. Have gone with 0.025" top ring and 0.032" second ring as reccomended by Allan (rossco). It was a bit strange that the gaps were so big in the first place I wasn't sure whether to leave them be or not. Maybe the material is slightly more expansive when hot.

Re: Ring gaps 4.6 v8 1 bar of boost

The strange thing is I have put the top ring in the bore and the gap was 0.55mm which is nearly 22 thou which is already quite large when referenced to the manual. The upper limit in the manual is 20 thou. I want it to be safe but at the same time not go through more oil than fuel!

Ring gaps 4.6 v8 1 bar of boost

Hi guys,
I'm struggling with this part of the engine build as it seems there is definitive answer. I have a standard bore with Goetze rings. What gap would you recommend? We are aiming for around 400hp

Thanks in advance.

The Thor manifold was modified by ACR you think?

That's good to know. Wonder what torque that would have made!!

Thor 5.0?

Hi all,
I'm in two minds whether to build a 4.6 in my discovery 2 or a 5.0. My question is that would a Thor inlet manifold be able to cope with 5 litres? Or a modified version of it? I would like to think it would be able to give a lot of torque maybe 350 lb ft? Has anyone done it?

I have just looked at real steels catalogue and seen that. I need to build an engine regardless as I think I'm starting to get slipping liners. I would only like to build the engine once if I can help it, so I'd rather go big from the off if that's what it takes. My goal is to try and make it have t...

Yeah I was aware of mark Adams/tornado systems. Was probably going to go down that road when it's completed anyway to ensure all feeling is right etc. Am I better of spending money just increasing the capacity further? To 5 litres using striker crank? I have seen real steels 5.0 and it looks impress...

Ok what is a good inlet manifold upgrade in my application for a Landrover discovery? Modify the original or upgrade. Like I said I don't want to spend money on updated heads if the inlet manifold is going to hold it back.

Are there any alternative manifolds? Apart from the gems one? Does the gems one really lose that much torque?

I'm not sure what kind of finish afm leaves and if you can choose a finish. I'm not too worried about polishing the manifold just to open it out a bit as it does seem very restrictive

I believe that's more for carburettor engines as the mixture goes all the way through the manifold. As mine is fuel injected the air doesn't see any fuel until it is pretty much in the head.

Deburring services in Cheltenham seem to do it. That isn't too far from me but there seem to be a few places. Search abrasive flow machining or extrude honing and a few come up.
