Re: Compression ratios - I've got a headache.

I’ve got several heads to choose from, and I will be using a higher lift cam - not sure which yet. I’m just trying to get my head around which pistons to get, and I keep hearing that the 4.0HC pistons give 11:1, but I can’t get anywhere near that with my calculations!. I’ll be measuring everything, ...

Re: Compression ratios - I've got a headache.

Where does 11:1 come from? I can’t get anywhere close to this with my calculations. The 13cc is for the 4.0 HC pistons, which gives me about 10.1:1 CR... 4.0 LC pistons come out at nearly the same as 4.6 HC pistons (actually a little more at about 23cc) So 4.0LC pistons would give a slightly lower C...

Double check, but I think the std gasket is 95.5?? I’ll have to check tomorrow.

Re: Suggestion for parts suppliers please.

The reasons - yeah, sort of. I rebuilt my first V8 back in about 2002 ish - can’t remember exactly - heck, it was 20 years ago... My 3.9 knocked a big end and was slipping a liner anyway, so I did my research. It was right in the middle of the slipping liners debacle, with brand new Rover blocks hav...

Re: Compression ratios - I've got a headache.

Thanks for that - your numbers seem to match mine - I’m not losing my marbles. I’ll fully check in the morning in the office. I had to apply the same fiddle factor to get the CR to match the spec too. But I measure the piston to block clearance at 1.7 or 1.8mm from memory... So, it’s 4.0 HC pistons ...

Suggestion for parts suppliers please.

Hi all, after the very sad demise of V8Tuner, I'm on the hunt for a supplier of tuning parts for the V8, and I'm surprised to find so few places around on the net. I can get standard parts no problem through my usual LR contacts and suppliers - Turner Engineering are a great supplier that I use for ...

Compression ratios - I've got a headache.

OK, I'm rebuilding my 4.0 litre Defender 50th - currently a bog standard High Comp 4.0 running GEMS. Engine was fine until it was run with the oil pickup detached, so mains are scuffed up, but top end and bores fine. The mint condition 4.0 HC pistons went into a customers D2 4.0 engine rebuild. Plan...

Mmmm - the "stage 4" might be a little too much - I need to keep the idle sensible.

Camshaft Advice please...

Hi All, I'm building up the 4.0 GEMS engine in my defender 90 (50th anniversary) it's going out to 4.6, with approx 9.7;1 CR, my big valve gas flowed heads on it. The heads came off a 4.6 hotwire in a RRC built by Lund with an LE1 camshaft on it. I liked the setup in the RRC, but always felt like it...

Quick question about distributors on RV8

I have a 3.5 “flapper” Eli with a dud distributor and dodgy flapper valve.
Will the later dizzy off a Hotwire 3.9 physically fit this engine?

I will be using megasquirt so don’t need the advance curve to be right, just the spark distribution function of the distributor.

Re: Always use coolant.

Will definitely convert to liners - whichever block I use. This block has had a long period of running with bad coolant. The aluminium in this area is very porous, the damage seems to creep down a lot further than can be seen here. When I get the block out, I think I’ll find a lot more corrosion on ...

Always use coolant.

I’m repairing a 4.0 Thor in a Disco 2 at the moment. Owner reported coolant loss and overheating. So I’m anticipating head gasket or slipped liners. I find this horrid bit of corrosion.... ( and also some slipped liners). I’m wondering if we can weld it up and fit top hats? ( or willl I gain another...

Lund strikes again!

Way back when Lund was trading, I bought an engine from him - a 4.6 top hatted block and big valve heads with an LE1 cam running a dizzy and “old” oil pump to replace my ailing 3.9 in my 1992 RRC. To be honest, all has been well with the engine ( apart from a nagging rear crank seal leak) for over 5...
