Re: Oil Cooler Pipes

For some reason the forum wouldn't let me attach two images to the initial post, so this is what I mean by 'just the oil cooler bit' :D

Oil Cooler Pipes

Hi all, I've got a Land Rover 90 with a Disco 3.9 v8 in it. The guy who owned it before me (who presumably did the conversion) decided to replace the radiator but keep the oil cooler bit.. It's just hanging there looking broken so now I'm looking to fit a Mocal oil cooler. When I removed this cooler...

Dead MAF?

Hi all, I bought a Defender recently, that has the 3.9 v8 EFI from a discovery. I've had it for about three weeks - it's been running fine but then yesterday it started messing around - it wouldn't rev when I hit the accelerator. It was intermittent to start with but then went full on broken. I mana...

Thanks Ged, I thought that as well, just trying to decide whether to go with a straight replacement (which seem to be pretty hard to find) or replace that and the mocal takeoff I have (type H here): http://www.mocal.co.uk/products.html#remotefilterheads with the Mocal combination pump and take off: ...

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, it is the pressure relief valve plug. According to my Haynes manual, it should be 45 lb.ft https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5939409/2016-05-13%2010.56.18.jpg So I'll do it up to 30 next time, but the question is still - what's the thread size? It's definitely abo...

Pressure relief valve thread size

Hi all, I've got a Rover v8 from a Disco 1 in my kit car. I have been having some oil leaks from the bolts in the oil pump housing so I replace all the washers and gaskets, and as I was torquing up the bolt holding the pressure relief valve in (according to the Haynes manual, 48 lbft) the bolt went ...

That's a nice solution! Did you fabricate the bracket yourself?

I think with my level of skill it's "should go off" not "will go off" :)

I have ordered a new drive gear and when I get back from a work trip, I'm going to refit, triple-check the key parallel-ness and gear orientation, prime the pump and the remote hoses, and spin the engine with a drill to check everything is ok. Should I be able to get the oil pressure high enough wit...

Dave: Yes there was a problem with the lubrication system - mounting the oil filter remote meant that even though I packed the pump with vaseline, I forgot that I would need to fill the hoses to the remote so I had two huge air bubbles in the system, so the pump de-primed itself when it started. Ged...

Hey Dave, The teeth on the drive gear look pretty flat compared to images I found through google. I'm pretty sure the dizzy was located correctly - the lip on the housing was right up against the block and the bolt was fully tightened. On the positive side, Since the remote filter housing is above t...

Thanks for the reply. The relief spring in the pump is the original as it came out of the Disco - I can only assume that the previous owner did not swap it from the original. I bought the oil filter as a Disco 1 filter, so again I assume it is correct. The original problem with oil flow was that I h...

Worn distributor drive gear - cause or effect?

Hi all, I am building a kit car with the 3.5 v8 from a Discovery 1, with a MegaSquirt system (so the distributor is only used to drive the oil pump and doesn't have the cap on). I did a full rebuild and after finishing the new wiring loom, managed to get the engine to run for about 30 seconds. Long ...

R380 rebuild - sticking when in gear

Hi all, Building a locost with a Rover v8 engine from a Disco. Got the engine running with a new microsquirt injection/ignition system, sounds lumpy but great! Now looking at the gearbox. It's an R380 from eBay - obviously the bolt holes don't match the original bellhousing so I dismantled it and sw...

Amplifier testing

Hi all, I'm building a car, using the Rover 3.5 v8 efi out of a 1990 Discovery. I finally got all the wiring sorted out - everything now works as it should (fuel pump pumps when ignition is turned on, engine turns over, turning off ignition the air flow flap resets itself), however it won't start. G...
