Re: Bellhousing for Mazda mx5 box to Rover V8

Why the Mazda box ? Doesn't seem like an ideal or common swap ? The Mazda 5-speed box is light and apparently strong enough for a 3.5 Rover but the bellhousing problem makes it a non starter now. The BMW box looks big and heavy, don't know about the Toyota box but both need a bellhousing at signifi...

Re: Bellhousing for Mazda mx5 box to Rover V8

Rpi do a kit with what looks like a bolt on bellhousing so I just assumed they were separate (maybe they modify the front of the box?) However, they wouldn't just sell one on its own. On reflection I think the cost is going to put a stop to this idea.

ZF4HP24 drive plate bolts

This is about the smaller plate bolted to the torque converter (it's the biggest of the three sizes as used on the 4.6 engine) not the big flex plate with the ring gear - the smaller plate attaches to the crank adapter with four flange headed grade 8.8 M10x25mm bolts, I'm missing these and I think t...

Bellhousing for Mazda mx5 box to Rover V8

Does anyone know of a supplier of one to fit a 5 speed manual MX5 gearbox to a Rover?

Re: Plug leads - is thicker better?

Cheers guys, I've not had much luck trying to find an answer either apart from the claims on various manufacturers websites. Better the devil you know as the saying goes so I'll stick with the same 8mm Powerspark leads - I found the bill for my current leads and it's dated 2013 so fingers crossed th...

Plug leads - is thicker better?

I've an open uncovered Rover V8 with a distributor and Lumenition ignition and noticed recently that there is an occasional spark jumping from the king lead so it needs replacing and since all the plug leads were bought at the same time I might as well change them too. If the conductive core is the ...

Re: Alternator brackets Rover V8

This is probably too late but here's my fabricated left-hand bracket, unfortunately you can't really see any detail. Not the best belt wrap on the crank pulley but it's worked just fine for the last 22 years.

Re: Oil Pump Tight

If there's 'notchiness' then you're right, fit new gears. I needed a replacement pump base a few years ago and couldn't find a new one, I ended up using a new Mocal remote filter base instead - it worked out well since I could then choose a remote filter head to take a much bigger filter too. I'd al...

Re: Distributor roll pin

Try searching for roll pins, there's a lot of companies making them and some do bespoke sizes if it turns out that's what you need.

Re: Does the oil flow change direction in a ZF4HP22?

All I've managed to find is some mention of the flow reversing on landyzone.co.uk and lr4x4.com forums. Also on a Volvo(?) or BMW(?) forum and an Australian Land Rover forum neither of which I can find again. Do you have a link for the bowlers website? I've found Bowler Transmissions in Illinois USA...

Does the oil flow change direction in a ZF4HP22?

Some people say the oil flow reverses direction when the torque converter locks up and some say it doesn't - who is right? I ask because the thermostat I was planning on using has ports marked in and out so if the flow does reverse this means the thermostat will be either the right way round or back...

Re: Automatic gearbox oil temperature

I read somewhere about this being a not uncommon Lexus(?) problem where the oil pipe in the radiator corrodes and being under pressure, radiator water is forced into the gearbox oil. I haven't heard of this being a problem with Rover/Land Rover/Range Rover boxes but I think I'll stick with an air co...

Re: Automatic gearbox oil temperature

I was thinking of a Mocal thermostat, the one intended for an engine oil cooler that you plumb into the flexible hoses - it has an internal bypass so cold thick oil tries to take the path of least resistance back through the return hose rather than through the cooler and as the oil heats up the ther...

Re: Automatic gearbox oil temperature

I've spent hours and hours on the internet and overheating is mentioned but overcooling isn't (I don't count slow shifts etc while warming up) so you're right, I'll just use a cooler from the gearbox donor car and keep an eye on the fluid temperature to and from the gearbox. If it turns out to be al...

Automatic gearbox oil temperature

My radiator doesn't have a built-in transmission cooler so I'll be fitting an air cooled one when I do the LT77 to ZF4HP conversion. Apparently about 80-85ºC is the maximum working temperature for ATF but is there a minimum? I'm just wondering if a freezing cold day with enough speed to lock the tor...
