I thought Vaseline was used as it would dissolve nicely in the engine. I don't know what bog standard grease would do! Unless you are going to load a grease gun with Vaseline that is....

Aluminium always has a layer of aluminium oxide on it, pretty much as soon as it is exposed to air. Unlike rust, it is stable and doesn't grow/corrode the metal.

Lay the head on its back and fill the chamber with liquid. See if it drains out.

I have swapped them, but the difference is in the pedestal which they screw into. But I *think* it's going to be OK with the 118mm pushrod.

Can't you get a spanner on them and swap them?
