Aluminium always has a layer of aluminium oxide on it, pretty much as soon as it is exposed to air. Unlike rust, it is stable and doesn't grow/corrode the metal.

Another thing to try is replace the bushes that hold the gearstick extension on. My gear-change got noticeably better after I spent a bit of time changing them and cleaning that area up.
