Failure of stock cast 3.9/4.0 pistons at higher RPM? Or Forged options?

AE Hepolite HRC1828 22059 The "books" suggest that 6K rpm is all these are good for, with maybe an occasion blast up to 6500 rpm. Has anyone taken these higher on more than an occasional excursion and suffered (or not) a failure? I'm trying to decide if I should stick with them and pick a cam that s...

Re: DTA E48 on RV8?

Thanks Stevie,

I was also surprised to hear of the supposedly fragile ign drivers; I personally never had a problem.

Is the stock Landrover coil good enough for a track engine, or should I look at an upgrade? Any suggestions?

DTA E48 on RV8?

I’m building an SD1 for a supposed “budget” race series, and would like to use the E48EXP I removed off my mini a few years ago (upgraded to Emerald for all the extra bells and whistles). It’s an engine, so I’m sure the DTA E48 has been used many times on the Rover V8 (Serp 3.9 with dizzy). I assume...

Re: Prepping head for high lift cam - springs? Stem seals?

That is great info Jukka! I didn't know that these cutters existed, that the SBC stems were the same dia, or that the SBC seal loation dia was smaller and hence could be cut into the rover guide! If only they made one of their cool spring seat cutters for the 1.23" OD of the standard rover spring po...

Re: Prepping head for high lift cam - springs? Stem seals?

Machined the top of the valve stem? Do you mean you machined the groove that the collets sit in?

Prepping head for high lift cam - springs? Stem seals?

Donor heads: standard 3.9 issue, standard valves (for now). Have a set of early SD1 heads with the machined (pre-sintered) valve caps I'll be using to get rid of the sintered stuff. I'm going to be using a Crane 901171 F-248/3334-8, so need .533" lift at the valve per this: http://powermechanics.com...

What to do with old TR7 / SD1 LT77 gearboxes?

I've got Four LT77s - The first two gearboxes have the "CL" code (TR7). The third is a 19A unit, and a fourth that doesn't have the boss on the side, so I guess that makes it one of the earliest. Are these all pretty much worthless? Would I be best just dismantling them and selling off gears / synch...

Re: Need jaguar caliper info, for comparing Lexus LS400 calipers

I really appreciate the input, wow, 48mm, its no wonder folks find these impressive, despite the not overly significant increase in disc diameter; that's a 17% increase in pad clamp force for the same pedal effort! I've decided the Lexus calipers, while fantastically cheap, simply don't fit very wel...

Need jaguar caliper info, for comparing Lexus LS400 calipers

I know many folks swap over to the XJS calipers, but those things look really, really heavy! I’ve just pulled a set of 4 pot Calipers and discs off a ‘97 LS400 for £27 and am looking for a comparison to stock vitesse and jag stuff as regards piston area and unspung weight increase (of jag and Lexus ...

Re: Bell housing / Block bolt hole patterm?

Nope, that is the 64 on pattern.
The RV8 is the 61-63 Buick / olds / Pontiac (BOP) 215 cubic inch pattern - and the even rarer 198ci V6 pattern.
Just as well, because I can’t tell what the heck is going on with that drawing! Where are they referencing the dimensions from???

Hmmmmmm, I wonder about just using the ZF bell housing, and mating that to the T5, using a concentric slave cyl...

Bell housing / Block bolt hole patterm?

I've found a few posts asking for this, and one that had an un-finished DXF of the dimensions, but has anyone verified the accuracy of the dimensions? I'm tempted to use a bell housing off a ZF autobox (as it has an identifiable bore concentric to the centre-line of the crank), clock it in on my mil...

Crank is the same 120K mile unit from the original engine - exactly the same as it came out, except for a good cleaning and a light polish to take the new shells. I did actually check the block was square with a surface plate and feelers, and it checked out ok. I didn't think to pop a cam in there t...

Well, I got close, but not close enough for me to be happy. I went back and very carefully scraped, and cleaned all the journal bores, faces relating to the main caps, and including the rear face of the shells to work this out. I had already cleaned and checked prior to the first assy attempt, but w...

Just the crank. I always make sure this is perfect before fitting the rods or anything else. Have used plastiguage - that's how I got the clearance (measured one cap at a time rather than clamping all five down then measuring them all at the same time). I guess I could measure the clearance all at t...
