Rover 3.5 oil filler neck...

Post by Jono FD3 »

Sorry for all the questions guys!! LOL

Does anyone know if the short extention tube for the oil fill unscrews fro the rocker box or is it part of the casting?? Reason being I would like to remove it and have it like the later p38 rockers with an after market flush oil cap as I'm going to doctor them a little to improve the looks of the engine!

Cheers
Jono

They do unscrew. Can be a bit of a b*gger though.

Yes. IIRC, it has the same thread as the opposite side on some versions which takes the flame trap.

Jono,

You can use the original oil cap and smarten it up by removing the plastic cover and polishing it, but you must grind off the area below the thread otherwise it will make contact with the rockers with resultant expensive damage.

you can get modified ones off e-bay but it's easy to do yourself.

Sweet, that's what I wanted to know ;)
So the thread in the rocker box is the same as the stock cap? Makes my plan alot easyer!!

Sorry to necro-post, but makes more sense than creating a new one.

Anybody any insightful tips for removing the oil filler neck? I'm having a mare, it's having absolutely none of it.

That's crossed my mind. The catch here is I've already painted it with VHT, and don't want to have to redo it if possible. :-/

If you aren't going to use it again, drill 2 holes through it sideways and shove a Phillips screwdriver through it to turn it out.

Wrap the base with masking tape then cover it with a cloth before using slip pliers over the top of the cloth.
Hold the rocker box in a workmate or similar as everyone says they can be a pig and they are!

I've found gripping the neck in a vice & turning the cover works. If you're still struggling try tightening it slightly first before undoing it as this will help break the crud seal.

I do make filler caps & also filler necks so if you would like one of these pm me. I'll remove the part before the thread at no extra cost.

Best Regards

Ged
