NEW PB for Bones SD1 !!!!

Post by mgbv8 »

Richard (Bones) tinterweb has packed up so he cant get on here at the moment!

I couldnt make it to North Weald today because I was frantically trying to get my V8 back together. But I kept in touch with Bones by phone.

Now.... Some of you will remember the problems Bones has been having with the SD1 build.
Some of you will remember the SD1 going up in smoke at the Dyno day last year with wiring probs on the starter.

We all know what problems Bones has been having getting the V8 ready due to timing, cam and ignition issues etc.

I know how much bones has been looking forward to getting ready for testing at the Weald Today. And I was gutted for him when he rang me yesterday to tell me the bloody carbon bush in his Mallory dissy cap had broken.

But in true DIY V8 style he took a selection of dissy's and caps and made himself a working dissy with bits of string and gaffa tape.

Then this morning the nitrous system went tits up so he could not do what he was hoping to do. And run the SD1 with its gas. Poor old Bones was feeling a bit pee'd off by now as you can imagine. So he did some NASP runs anyway. But he got to spannering in the pits and eventually managed to get a 50 shot of gas on tap. He was keeping everything crossed that the gaffa tape dissy held up ok.

So!
He's in the queue to race!
All he can think about is "will the dissy hold together"?? "will the nitrous actually activate when I hit the pedal"?? Tension is building!!. Bones is sweating buckets!! He's asking TopCat if he has any Ulcer pills on him??

Then, just as he was one car from the front of the queue and all adrenalined up!! Some twat called Perry rang him to find out how he was doing..

""You can guess by now that I'm hanging this out for the big finale can't you"" :)

Where was I?... Oh yes...

So seconds from having to put his helmet on, some tit rings him for a chat!

The conversation went like this. "Hi rich, its Pel, how you doing". Rich say's "I've had a bloody night mare mate...Oh bugger me, its my turn, talk later", click, brrrr. Phone went dead.

And I bet he was glad to have hung up right then.

Because that old Tank of an SD1 with its home brewed 3.9 and a 50 shot of gas did him well proud and went on to pull a 14.33 @ 102mph :)

WELL DONE RICHARD!!

I BET YOUR HAVING A BEER RIGHT NOW MATE...

You have worked so hard to try and pull this thing together havent you.

PS
Richard Beat an AMG merc on the day too.....Result!!

Rich,

Well done for getting it on the strip albeit with a bit of sticky tape holding the dizzy together,

Bit pissed off that I couldn't make it, but I sorted the carb re calibration with encouragement from Pete/Sidecar and the engines now running sweet as a nut and starts well from cold and idles at 1000 RPM without difficulty and will mprobably go a bit lower.

I still have a secondary problem with the engine appearing to overheat even after replacing the thermostat.

I have just borrowed a very expensive lazer temp measurer thingy so can check whether it's the guage playing up, although that was replaced when the new engine went in, I'll find out this evening when I can get into the garage.

Hi all, net is working again, Thanks Perry for putting the post up, you put it so much better than i would off, I was well pleased with the time, ive still got alot of things to sought out, like the nos, fuel, and timing and the dizzy so i can run with 150 shot of gas, and i hope by July to have the new c.w.p fitted, And as normal at nth weald it was a good time, and the car can only get quicker, It was nice to beat the v8 amg merc without using gas, but any longer than a 1/4 mile he would of gone passed me, Looking forward to the June meet, :D rich So you will be ok for the june meet then Kevin, and i hope to beat my PB then aswell, :D

Me too if all is well.

I'm just going down to the garage to try and sort out this apparent cooling issue.

I'll look forward to seeing you guys up there.

Well i should add some info, my brother has helped me alot with working on it, all the advice from the forum, and im glad i changed the cam for a crower item from v8 tuner so thanks to Paul for the advice and help with that, all the parts on the 3.9 are of the 3.5 i had which was no good of the line with the typhoon cam in it,the car was to heavy and wrong gearbox. so if you want a cam goto v8 tuner, the 13s are looking good :D rich

I should be in the MG Rich!

In fact. I'll be turning the key on the new build in about an hour. Then I just need to make a new exhaust system and I'll be at the Pod all this weekend testing and hopefully not breaking stuff again :)

well no PB for me at the weekend, but the ignition timing is confusing, after the last race meeting and bad dizzy cap, well ive done the timing 12btdc and total advance so 1st run no gas done a 15.59 and 95mph, 2nd run adjusted timing to use gas to 6btdc but gas didnt work but time 15.33 and 93 mph and it run a 15.41 aswell, so less timing it ran quicker :? rich

So much for the bad weather!!
I'm still peeling bits off my scalp from the 14th

Rich!
We need a few hours together on your engine so we can set it up for the gas mate.

well im not sure if both systems for gas will be done by retro day :( , but ive had my axle c,w,p done its 3.44 gear know as apposed to 3.09 that was in it, cant afford a lsd so some fat tyres might be needed (or is that just wishfull thinking), ive been reading about the nos set up, and the fuel pressure switch should be atleast 24"away from the fuel soleniod mine was about 1" so thats been moved and the fuel line Y piece is moved also. :) all this work on the rover has taken me away from the escort again :( rich

thanks to Perry, both systems worked and i did a 13,80s and 103mph,and only on a 85 shot of gas,but a couple of runs later the axle went belly up, need 2 planet wheels know as they are in tiny pieces, but still a good day :( rich

I told you we could make that SD1 quick didnt I Rich??

Which pinion gears broke. The ones on the diff pin or the ones that drive the shafts?

I could tell you were well happy with a 13.8 from today mate ;)

Thats half a second off your last PB !!!!!!!!

The last burnout was spot on. As we watched it I nudged Kenny and said "this could be the one mate, another PB today" It just goes to show that those tyres will hook up if you get them hot enough. And it also shows that the 1st stage nitrous is giving plenty of power for the launch eh?

So get fixing and get her back out. Next time we can drop the start power on the 1st stage and increase tage 2 so it wont be such a shock to the diff.

Oh!!
And thanks to you and Kenny for the BBQ lunch today mate.
