The original Buick engine and early Rover engines did not have grooves in the front camshaft bearing and didn't have problems. Bearing made in the USA tend to be not grooved.

The grooves are considered to give better oil feed to the distributor drive via the keyway in the camshaft gear but I have used non grooved bearings without a problem. The grooves may have been added to later engines to help lubricate the thrust plate which is fitted to serp engines.

The timing chain also get some oil from the front of crank main bearing no 1.

I'd go for the grooved type.
