Which turbo?

Post by dbv8 »

I am about to order a turbo for my latest engine build.
I think I am decided on a genuine Garrett GTX3582r T3 4 bolt with 1.06 A/R.

The engine is a 5.0 rover v8 from ACR. Offset crank, Chevy rods, forged pistons. A pair of stage 1 wildcat heads. 9:1 CR.

I am aiming for 550 bhp on low boost but ultimately over 700. The TVR will remain road legal and cover a few thousand miles but has to step up at the drag strip.

So do we think this spec is a good base for development?

T4 would be better surely?

Can I ask have you considered a Borg Warner or even a holset? I think garrets are massively overpriced. Plenty of people using much cheaper turbos to good effect these days. Borgs and holsets can come with billet wheels etc. as well. You going to be running twin wastegates as well?

I was offered a BW from turbo dynamics with a good discount but heard there were some bad stories. I guess like most things there will be good and bad.
Apart fom price i havent heard anything too bad about Garrett.

We have chosen a T3 due to size really. Space is a little tight. Also the fitting kit is already made up. Eann Whalley has done about 10 TVRs already and is sorting mine

I can't see a GT35 of any kind ever doing 700hp on a 5.0 engine

Even on a smaller 4cyl car 700hp is really pushing the upper limits of such a turbo, and the engine combo needs to be good to achieve it.

And as far as reliability goes...I'd take the BW...and did for my own car.

words from turbo dynamics....

I’m afraid the GT3582 is not really going to help you achieve the kind of power figures you are chasing.
A GTX3582 would suit better and be good for 700-750bhp but is probably a bit on the small side for a 5L displacement.

We are also a distributor of BorgWarner turbochargers which are currently much further developed than any of the Garrett performance range.
A BorgWarner EFR has similar aspect to the GTX range, a large billet wheel and ported compressor shroud.
However, the EFR comes with a further upgraded metal bearing cage as opposed to the resin/plastic carriers supplied by Garrett and a gamma-ti/titanium aluminide turbine shaft which is 50% lighter than a regular hardened steel shaft.
Effectively making spool times even faster but providing a suitable top end gain.
I would highly recommend the EFR 8374 which is a 750bhp capable turbo which comes in at a retail price of £1558+vat.
However, I can make the price more favourable at £1250 which is more in to the Garrett type of price range.
What you’re working on sounds extremely interesting, I’m really hoping I can help you out with the project.
It would be nice to see some photos of what you’ve got up to, if you have the time.
I look forward to hearing back from you.

EFR would be nice...and that price if its including VAT isnt bad at all.

The 8374 is actually very close to what I use...and almost identical to this below.
Mine have a slightly larger compressor, albeit a slightly smaller turbine.

For reference, their 83 refers to the exducer on the impeller, and the 74 refers to the exducer on the turbine.

http://www.agpturbo.com/borg-warner-s36 ... 009097056/

The 62mm unit above has the same impeller as the EFR, but a smaller 68mm turbine, and of course a different design of turbine wheel. And an oil journal unit.

IMO it's still too small for what you want.

At a minimum for a single I'd use this

http://www.agpturbo.com/borg-warner-s36 ... 009097049/

That would be classed as a 9173 if you compared to an EFR, or 6673 for most other brands.

But really as a single, I'd aim a little bigger and opt for the

http://www.agpturbo.com/borg-warner-s36 ... 009097051/

All the above posted prices do not include a turbine housing, although you can also get a T3 housing if you had to go down that road

Slightly cheaper are the basic cast versions

http://www.agpturbo.com/borg-warner-s36 ... 73-177281/

But yes, these BW's are physically a decent size compared to the likes of some Garrett, Precision, Turbonetics etc
The BW's are well tried and tested and very robust though

Thanks for that Stevie.
How would that GT4094R stack up do you think?

Might still be interested.
If its a possible solution then could i have it for trial fit?

Turbo dynamics have offered to send a dummy EFR for fitting trials. Maybe i should ask them to send a larger one

4094 would be somewhere in the upper/middle of that range.

The 94 denotes 94mm on the exducer of the impeller so it's a fairly large wheel with 68mm inducer, and a slightly larger turbine than the others

http://www.agpturbo.com/garrett-dual-ba ... g-gt4094r/

http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mv ... RT-TBO-047

I see ATP above list some T3 turbine housings for them too, must be custom made as normally you wouldnt get a T3 for a turbine that large.

EFR's would probably be a bit smaller diameter, but longer. 4094 is fairly bulky too...but then so are the BW units

Obviously when you move to billet wheels, for any given size they'll be lighter than the cast version which can help spool, and generally they're a better design so flow more air too. But you still need a turbine wheel to let everything out again...that's a big area the T3/GT35's will be too small for a 5.0

The basic cast 366 is probably slightly bigger than most, I fabricated my setup around that turbo ( a friend had 2 of them so that was handy ) as a worst case scenario should I want to upgrade to larger units, I knew it would be a simple bolt in swap if I needed.
My actual units were just slightly smaller though.

A GT35 would be a good bit smaller.

Have a look at the garratt boost adviser app, plug in your engine numbers and gives you a list of recommended turbos and pressure maps.

I ordered it on Friday.
Just seen your email Stevie.... too late now.

Its a genuine GTX3582r T4 1.06 A/R and 3" V band.
We reckon it will work well. After seeing my mates Chinese copy GT3582 give 573 bhp at 18 psi i ordered this one straight away. Simple fit.

With 30% more efficient heads (wildcat) who knows where i will end up. I t would be nice to have the bhp matching the number plate ;)
