Generic header tank.

Generic header tank.
I'd like to experiment with a larger header tank on my SD1. Any places that specialise and do a big range that I can choose from?
Just to clarify, it is a separate tank connected to the main rad by a small bore hose.

My car already has a factory header/expansion tank. If I fit an additional bottle like that to the overflow from the header tank, it fills up when the engine heats up, then does suck at least some back in when it cools. But it doesn't look too pretty.JSF55 wrote:Recovery tank ? I've always used the 500ml bicycle water bottles

I was more looking at used ones from various cars on Ebay to see what looks like I want.
Was also wondering if one with the now common plastic filler cap/pressure valve would be better than the original steel type. Some reports that these are not as well made as once.

I used to use one I had from an old Audi quattro, changed it to a newer A4 version. It was just a better shape for where I wanted it.DaveEFI wrote:I was more looking at used ones from various cars on Ebay to see what looks like I want.

I wouldnt be overly worried about what the cap was made from
It's a question I've asked, but not had a definitive reply. There are lots of variations on the SD1 cooling system. Different rads, pumps, the inlet manifold between carb and EFI and so on. Most SD1s have a plastic header tank, but air-con EFIs a brass one. Perhaps other air-con models.DEVONMAN wrote:If it was me I'd be wondering why the factory set up is not doing the job.
Or do all SD1's suffer from this?
Regards Denis
All I can say is my air-con auto EFI isn't unique with this problem, and has had it all the time I've owned it - over 25 years. And the first owner complained of it too, but the main dealer couldn't sort it under warranty.
I've not heard from anyone with the same spec which is definitely perfect.
I'm about to do some other things to the engine which involve the cooling system, so thought it would be a good time to try and sort this too. It's not really a major problem - just annoying.
