TVR needs more power - LS, L33 etc advice needed

Post by dbv8 »

Planning ahead for next winter.

I will be fitting either an LS or similar. Maybe an ally L33 or iron L59 to keep to e reasonable budget.
I fancy the Tremec TR 6060 6 speed.
Aim would be for 400 @ wheels NA and to accept a healthy nitrous shot at the strip.

A Dave Mac prop and driveshafts would be used.
The BTR diff should last a time but maybe something stronger and a higher ratio later.

Thoughts?

Hi
that sounds fun, I would go with the L33 and go for a long ish duration cam (say 225 to 235 @ .05) as that will give you an engine that will rev freely and have a power curve that will suit the TVR. . . however I think that will give you more like 420 to 430 at the wheels maybe a little more. A six speed box is an interesting idea, is it a close ratio box, or one with long legs like the T5/6 ?
Best regards

More is good.

The TR6060 IIRC is 2.66,1.78,1.3,1,.8 and a long 0.63

With my current 3.54:1 diff and 265/35/18 tyres it will be a little long legged to say the least. Still need 4th for the strip tho.
With a touch of gas i will have sufficient power for 200 mph. Do i have the nerve for that in a soft top? Only one way to find out

The diff will be swapped at some point.... jag, skyline? Need to do some research. But maybe 3.7 or more would make more sense

Hi
not sure what type of road use you see, but 6th with that box and diff ratio will be be hard work at 70, 2k revs cruise is really too low, I would consider something lower. The trouble is the first is quite nice, if you allow yourself a few hundred extra revs you are looking at first gear 0-60. I think with the right cam and good lifters you could recon on a 7.5k red line which makes a lower final drive ratio a very sensible proposition. You could always go for the 6 liter block and heads and a 4.8 crank and a mechanical roller cam and build a real screamer (still 5.3 litres) that would see really big power.

A mate of mine has a LS3 to 6.9 ltr with Jenvey throttle boddies for near 600 bhp in a TVR Cerbera. He could take it to 7400 rpm but has made some recent changes to valve springs etc and has more now.
Hes cracked 202 mph with a TKO 600 box and a 3.08 diff.

I like the idea of the 6 speed box and apparently its good for 1000bhp.

I havent spoke to them no. They only seem to have older engines on the website.

Keep an eye out for me for a 5.3 ally or iron truck pullout or similar

The guy I got mine from still has some, although he's put the price up since I bought mine... He may be interested in haggling...?

Yes ive seen that. So you can recommend the guy then?
These engines are becoming more popular so i guess he can make a bit more now. Can i ask what you paid and what you actually bought? How much came with the engine and did it need any work?

Would I recommend him? I wouldn't say just yet. He seemed straight enough. I've got the engine in my garage but not had a chance to really go over it yet. I paid £1620 for the bare engine, water pump and coil packs.

I only need an alternator, starter, clutch, gearbox adapter and maybe a PS pump... not sure yet. I also needed an inlet manifold, but I have sourced an LS6 unit with injectors, rails and cable TB for £150

I'll need an ecu and wiring aswell, but I'd have needed the ancillaries, clutch and the ecu/wiring if I used the RV8 I had anyway, so I wasn't including that in the engine price. I thought it was a reasonable price, considering the cost it would have taken to get the 3.5 RV8 anywhere near the 300 ponies mark.

300 ponies? I am pulling a 325bhp rover out of mine to replace with the L33. I aim to tune to at least 400.

I contacted Ian yesterday and I may be paying him a visit for a look at what he has and a good chat.
