It did run fine
I took the dizzy out to sell it and refit the stock one that came out
So no it wasn't at TDC when i took it out but it was when i refitted it
Im putting a 3.9 in my disco and selling the 3.5 and the aftermarket dizzy found a new home first
Yep it turns over and doesnt seem to fire |

No tricks to it except common sense - set crank to TDC number one - Identify number one position on the dizzy via the correct lead - make sure that when the dizzy goes back in that the rotor arm is pointing at correct position. Job done.
Things to consider.
Rotor arm rotates clockwises as dizzy(static) is pushed into the cam drive skew gear - so has to start in position anticlockwise to final position.
Dizzy drives oil pump so slot has to set in position to line up with rotor arm position when seated.

Ok so what if the leads have been removed
Do i just pick where p1 will be or does it need to be in a particular place like 9 o'clock or 3 o'clock |

Turn the engine to 6 degrees before TDC on the compression stroke of No1 cylinder. Check it is the compression stroke by looking at the rocker arms or removing the spark plug, backing off the crank, and feeling the pressure with a finger as you rotate it to the mark.
Turn the oil pump drive to the 10 to 4 position.
Set the rotor arm to point straight ahead (to the front of the engine)
As you enter the dizzy, the rotor arm will turn and the oil pump drive engage.
This pic shows the layout of the plug leads.

To find out where TDC is, I remove the 'even' rocker cover and turn the engine until both valves on no. 6 are open equally. Then put in the distributor.
With the distributor, I ensure two things:
1. The rotor arm is pointing at no. 1
2. The low tension device (e.g. points, spike on the 8-sided ring etc) is c*ck on the firing point.
That is generally enough to get it started, then tune away.
