head studs question

Post by Seight-V8 »

hello all,

finally some nice cometic head gaskets turned up from America....long 5 weeks wait.....

next question though is head studs.

theres been a lot of posts about thread length and depth in the block and mine is the older 4.6 block.

looking at the arp studs I have they are the older buick 124-4003 set.

But I cant find any definitive proof that the newer arp head stud set 157-4301,h as any longer thread than the older set.

Has anyone got or had both sets that can confirm?.

Just dont want to spend more money to find out I get the same studs, and looking at pictures on the web, doesn't really help.

I do notice john eales sells a set also, anyone used these?

cheers

scott

You can always message or call the help line at ARP and ask them.

Real Steel might also know. So too the US based BritshV8 forum. When I fitted the earlier set to my 4.6 with Buick 300 heads a couple of the studs were too long and I had to use spacers under the nuts.

rang john eales yesterday, and his studs are made to use all the thread part in the block.

So hopefully you cant use much more thread than that......

its another worry off my mind when I come to put the heads on, and its worth that in my book.

Should arrive wed next week, so job for next weekend.

Then hopefully I can get the engine back in the car, after a 2 year wait.

regards

scott

Too late now but I used the JE studs on my 4.6 because apparently the ARP's block thread is short and has been known to pull out of the block
Mine went in to the bottom of the holes so (IMHO) they're a far better bet than the ARP's.

That is because you used the wrong ARP kit for your engine - if you use the old Buick/Rover 3.5 kit this can happen but if you use the correct ARP kit for the 4.6 engine then all is good.

I'm sure mine came from real steal originally.....probably that fact that I didn't know the difference between the two ARP kits was to blame....

I'm much happier now I've got the john eales ones on, and a new calibrated torque wrench to make sure they are correct....

I've done all I can this time....but only running the engine will tell....

should find out sometime next year......

cheers
