9.5" clutch question

Post by ChrisJC »

So we are slowly moving forward. I have my shiny new 'Stumpy' R380 from Ashcroft Transmissions and I am mating it up to my 4.6 V8.

The bellhousing is small, so I am forced to use a 9.5" clutch.

Two questions chaps:
1. What 9.5" clutches are there that will take 300BHP ?
2. Where can I get my flywheel redrilled?

Thanks,

Chris.

I'm currently using an AP green spring setup and putting over 400bhp through mine
ok on the road, but with slicks etc on the drag strip it does slip a little when cogging into second and 3rd,

The AP racing unit as fitted to the 5.0 TVR cars i.e Chimaera and Griffith will cope with 300+ and is reasonably light in use :D

I have an AP clutch in my from RPI

Clutch Cover AP Driveline RPI CP3380-2
Clutch Plate AP Driveline RPI CP2346-4

Its about the best they do the rover V8, without paying more money.

Had my GEMS 4.6 flywheel drilled for a 9.5ins clutch at a local engineering firm.....its not hard to just a PCD, and a few tapped holes, and some dowels.....

Did have it all re-balanced afterwards too though.

I have 300bhp in a westfield and cant say I've noticed any problem with my clutch, although its a light car, seems to hold all the power I can throw at it.....not sure what might happen when it wears towards to bottom limit though.

regards

scott

Thanks. That AP suggestion looks interesting.
How much did that cost? Did you just give RPi the part numbers and they got it for you?
What release bearing did you use?

Thanks!

Chris.

I'm using a Helix four puc clutch along with their pressure plate, it copes with my 300BHP 4.6 and it still copes with another 100BHP NOS shot on top of the 300 BHP.

I had an RPI clutch, they told me that they were a 'job lot' meant for TVR's. The shock springs in the pressure plate broke in mine, luckily it did not damage the flywheel. Personally I don't like or trust RPI!

I found this on another website, it might help....

This might help, from the AP Racing website

Year 1976 - 1984 Diameter (mm) Ø240 Torque Capacity Nm (lbs/ft) 460 (339) Application (Road or Competition) Competition only Cover Assembly CP2394-60 Driven Plate Type Cerametallic (4 paddle) sprung centre Driven Plate Part Number CP2583-3 - 8.38mm (0.33") thick Spline Detail Ø1.00" x 23T Bearing OE

You really do not want to put the 2583 plate in a road car, ever, so be warned.

CP2394-60 cover requires a strong left leg

think I just rang RPI and asked for the best clutch and that's what came....

bearing is flat though, as the fingers of the clutch plate a radius type not flat...so you do get a crappy plastic housing with your bearing that I threw away and made my own adapter for a flat release bearing.

all worked fine though...

You can browse the AP site for info on torques and rating for each clutch and work out the best for you.

scott

Thanks Chaps. The fog is clearing!
I will get a CP2394-60 and a CP2346-4.

I could really do with a recommendation for the flywheel drilling as it is a Thor flywheel which is very rare so I don't want it done wrong! Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris.
