Generic header tank.

My guess too, Steve. I sort of assumed there would be somewhere that specialised in header tanks for the kit car etc market, and had a big range. But apparently not. I've only really found one which looks be suitable for the space available - and that has a smaller capacity then mine.

Anything on here?, there's lots of alternatives if you google.

Only one which would fit is the vertical one. But it's no larger than the one I have.Denis247 wrote:Anything on here?, there's lots of alternatives if you google.

Could you not fit 2 in series? Use one to store the water and the other for the expansion, with a line to siphon back on cooling? It shouldn't be too difficult to cobble together, and will give you more scope to stick things in nooks and corners.
One can be a regular non pressurised cap and the final one the correct spec cap.

What sort of volume header tank ar you thinking about?
Front engine front rad does not have a whole lot of liquid to expand massively
On GT40 about 16 litres (7 foot pipes engine in back to rad
Total expansion is about half a litre

Pretty certain it's not a head gasket problem, as the heeds were changed not that long ago for modified ones, with no difference.unstable load wrote:Just a silly question.... if it's pushing so much out, are you sure it's not a head gasket starting to go, or a liner issue, maybe?
If a liner issue, it has got no better/worse in 25 years.
Thing is chucks out some coolant than stops when it has found its own level, which doesn't suggest a gasket leak as it would continue to chuck out fluid?

if it's happy when it has found its own level, not just run it like that ?DaveEFI wrote:Pretty certain it's not a head gasket problem, as the heeds were changed not that long ago for modified ones, with no difference.unstable load wrote:Just a silly question.... if it's pushing so much out, are you sure it's not a head gasket starting to go, or a liner issue, maybe?

Does your current header tank/cap also have an overflow that can allow for ejecting and pulling water back in if it does put some out ?

Reason I don't want to leave it as is, is the low coolant warning light is on with the engine cold, but goes out when it heats up. Could live with that, but it also tends to go on and off at random when cruising at high speed. Of course I could try re-positioning the sensor(s) - but it would be easier to do with a new tank.

Going back to the original problem of coolant getting past the pressure cap,
I assume you are using a 15 lb/in2 cap.
Assuming also you have replaced the cap at some point and the problem persisted, could it be that in your brass header/expansion tank there is a flaw in the seating.
A temporary pressure gauge teed into the small pipe running between the rad and tank would show you what pressure the system is holding.

Yes - although the seat on the brass tank looks perfect.
I have a pressure test set, but can't at the moment use it to test the cap is holding pressure, via the filler on the rad, as I don't have a suitable adaptor. Been intending making one.
I've just got a 20 psi cap from Demon Tweeks. Looks to be better made than a Rimmer 15 psi one. Thing is they both tighten just at the very end of the travel. Which is not what I remember with other cars with the same system which seemed to start tightening earlier.
I've seen brass filler necks for sale, so it would be no big deal to fit a new one to my tank - I'm quite good at soldering.
