Hi All,
I am having a load of parts grid blasted and primed. They are Land Rover parts such as axle casings, wheel rims, suspension arms etc.

I'd like to paint them myself (spray I expect) with a decent hard wearing paint. For the wheels I want to do them 'limestone', and all the suspension parts black. Matt black will be fine.

What sort of paint process do people recommend? I need good instructions as well as it's been a while since I mixed any paint.

But I do have a compressor and spray-gun.

Go to the Frost website, they have some good products on there.
Alternatively, for the suspension bits, maybe Hammerite?

I wouldn't use Hammerite - its fine on railings and suchlike but chips too easily for automotive use.

I use Tractol and that seems pretty hardwearing, can be brushed or sprayed. Think I got it from Smith & Allan last time.

Not good on railings either.

Did half of mine with Smoothrite black, and the other half with Wicks ordinary gloss. Can't really say there was much to choose between them - except the price.

I'd use a decent chassis black, for a good supplier.

I am liking the idea of a Chassis Black (probably exactly the same enamel as the Tractol paint).

My mate and I used POR 15 chassis black from Frost and it was fantastic stuff.
Good quality and superb finish even by brush.
Spraying would be even better.
It was applied to the complete underside of his Mini and on the inside too over the floors.

Chris, as per the posts above, I've used both Eastwood and POR-15 chassis black from Frosts for nearly 20 years now. Both products work very well, but the most important thing is preparation. POR-15 is very, very good to use but can be a little UV unstable and does need the POR-15 chassis black finishing coat. Once done it seems unbustable and have used on many rally cars in the past that take a real beating.

Do be careful when spraying these products as they contain some nasty ingredients, including isocyantes that are banned in some US states. When spraying I always cover up, have superb ventilation and always use Gerson 2K masks

POR 15. Nothing better IMHO. Used it on my chassis and sprayed it.

See their video and it will convince you, did me when they hit it hard.

I like their engine paint too.

Yes, their engine enamel is superb with brilliant pigment...can't remember how many engines I've painted with this enamel...the end results are perfect and, above all, it stays on.
