Hi all. Went Drag Racing courtesy of Lewis Car Club at Stornoway airport last weekend with my 2.3 ton Chrysler 300c 5.7 Hemi.
Why is it so heavy? Well, I was expecting rain and poor traction so I filled up the twin LPG tanks and the petrol tank - doh! It stayed dry and I never spun a wheel once at all. I reckon the twin LPG tanks with mounting frames must weigh 70kg empty, add to that another 20kg of LPG system/pipes/electricals etc then another 45kg of LPG itself, then finally 110kg of driver and 50kg of petrol!!
If I do it again I'll run the gas almost empty and only have 1/4 tank of petrol and see what difference that makes.
Best run of the night was 14.726 seconds @ 93.7 mph, they have a proper computer interfaced portatree system that prints out your timeslips which is pretty cool. Upset a 300zx turbo and an impreza that thought this big estate car would be easy meat for them, hahaha. Bet they'll think twice when they hear the word "Hemi" in the future, teehee. Fastest car on the night was a subaru impreza which did an 11.something, but then it has 500+bhp! Audi RS6 was rapid, seriously rapid. I got beaten by an M3 and an M5 so I'm not ashamed, lol.

Then it will be removing excess weight and adding a small bit of gas to find yourself in the high 13's along with many supercars that weigh as much as your cars interior

Thanks Perry. I think there may be about a 3 foot drop from start to finish which will no doubt help, but I wouldn't have thought 3 foot over 1/4 mile would have made a lot of difference really? The 300c is a really underrated car in Hemi guise, the manufacturers book figures are somewhat conservative and most can easily beat the quoted 0-60mph times with relative ease. There are documented cases of some SRT-8 versiond doing low 5 second 0-60's out of the showroom, now I know it has another 400cc and 75bhp, but that's impressive!
Truth is, I was a touch disappointed with the top speed - I expected it to get off the line slower but accelerate from about 60 upwards quicker than it did. I'm a touch reluctant to give it too much throttle against the brakes for fear of damaging the transmission as that would be a seriously expensive problem to resolve.

Oh, and yes I will do it again next summer, but with less fuel and all the junk emptied out of the car, lol. No NOS for me though, the engine rebuild if I melted the pistons would be too much, haha.

Sounds like there are some fast Beetles and Scoobies up there as well according to Cath ?

Yep, a red Beetle, not sure on engine but it runs Nitrous and is seeeeeeriously fast, and a silver one with a turbocharged transporter engine in it!
As for the scoobs, they have a strong following on the island with a local garage owner being quite competitive in rallying one, which no doubt gets him a lot of work as his vehicle prep is first class and he is a good engine builder also.

Am I right in googling that Stornoway is a wee island way up North Scotland ???


That's pretty cool that you have drag racing etc there !! We struggle to get anything here at a decent venue

It looks like a really cool place too. My friend lives up there and it quite isolated. But the drag scene is strong
