Getting a little closer now :)

I had a problem on Friday with the wheel studs being wrong. But managed to get some from TopSpeed Automotive in Surrey and fit them Saturday afternoon :)

The only problem today was the shaft bearing retainer plates. I need to trim another 10 thou off them so they fit snug onto the bearings.

Next job is to trim 1mm off the outside of the bearings I will be using to press onto the shafts. I've discovered that I will have to fit the 4 bolts through the brake back plate before I sip it onto the shaft, otherwise I wont get them in.

Then the next job will be final measure of the shafts and cut them down to fit.

Its in and seems to work ok ??

All looks normal under the car (apart from the fact that the diff is actually clean) and its ready to roll. It still looks odd to me to see the 5 wheel studs now. Not sure what to do with the wheels next? If I can find a set of 4" smoothies to go on the front end I'll cut the studs down and stick some chrome hub caps on.

My Grand Daughter came out to see how I was getting on as well :)

It works :)

Did a few shakedown runs and then gave it a bit of welly. I added in 3 degree's of timing and dropped the nitrous way down to a soft and slow hit. Nice stable launches with no wrestling required for the first 200 feet and generally no drama on each of the 7 passes from today. The low comp engine seems to like some more timing. The best time was 9.73 so a bit slower than my 9.62 PB. But the MPH was up a good chunk at 141.68 :)

And virtually no air on the launch, but 60 foots were all at 1.5's instead of my usual 1.3's. So a bloody good result so far I think :)

I'll be happy if it works ok so other folk know there is a budget alternative for this sort of upgrade Olly!!

The spool was free from Mike. But these can be had for around the £50 mark on ebay + P&P
The shafts were £83 each, but with the postage and taxes they ended up costing just over £350 delivered to my door. Which is still £150 cheaper than it cost me to have the old shafts custom made a few years back.
The bearings are more expensive if you buy them from the shaft guys in the USA. But they happen to be a stock item at my work and can be found on Ebay for around £9 each. And they can be trimmed to fit the MGB axle case at home on a grinder if you are careful as this is what I did.
Wheel studs were from Topspeed Automotive @ £48 for ten.
Wheel nuts were about £2.50 each from Northants Tyres in Aldershot.
Rear wheels were £63 each from the same place.
MGB diff bearings were £33 from MGOC.
Spare shims came in at about £24 I think (these had to be ground to get the mesh correct)
I dropped my mate at the machine shop £100 for doing the faffing around with the spool to make it fit the crown wheel and re drilling.

So the work cost me about £720 all in. Which I think has been a good result for me :)

The total is actually £800 with the oil and gasket and powder coating. But its well under a grand and it seems to have worked at the moment.

Now I'm going to test it until something breaks ;)

Pel

PS!
The shafts are about £25 each cheaper in Australia, but Speed master would not reply to emails about shipping costs. I have a mate of a mate in Australia who is going to see how much it would cost to buy a pair and have them posted to him. Then work out how much it would cost by cheapest option to ship to the UK? They weigh in at 40lbs per pair.
